I just saw on a HHO article that Eric Lamaze missed the last two olympics due to testing positive for cocaine.

So are riders randomly tested for drugs in the equestrian disciplines? What exactly are they looking for? - it's not like coke is going to turn you into any better a rider after all.

I feel a bit surprised - although I guess it is just fairly standard to test all athletes. Theoretically, could the FEI test riders at international events? Or in fact DO they?

Since I work somewhere where recreational drug use is very normal, and open, I may have a distorted view of reality, but I would have thought many riders could fail drugs tests on these grounds?

Well I can't see any of ours were on coke, (unless it had rum in it) they looked so blooming miserable I'd be surprised if they'd even been on the sherbert dib dabs to be honest.

its completely public knowledge that our company works with some 'interesting characters' - not me, the artists! and yes, my mother does know

It's much tamer than what it was like in the 80s - I have been recounted the story endless times of how the old head of art once thought it would be a good idea to crawl across the glass roof of the office stark bollock naked whilst a directors meeting was going on. And no, he wasn't sacked!!

I'd expect our lot to be very professional, considering the effort and knowledge that has gone into their preparation. Just I can't help but think that plenty of other riders, not so much at olympic level, but at international level would fail a drugs test.

Is testing common at all?

I am intrigued - there must be some who would do it without thinking through that they are officially an athlete, and must therefore act like one.
