So after 6 weeks of with a back injury, what can i do to increase my riding fitness? I had a 30 minute dressage lesson yesterday (should have ben an hour) and i nearly died!!

Please help!!

Don't be afraid to take ibrofen & paracetamol, which you can take together, for pain relief. This however on its own does not cure the problem it only masks it but at least it can ease the pain while riding. You need to do some exercises to loosen up & strengthen your back muscles. Below is a video of exercises you can use which will help you do this.

I have had back problems for years, every day mu back hurts, it's just a case of how much but exercise does help. :)

thank you Toby - these look really helpful - my back itself isnt actually the problem at the moment -its my fitness levels - i was puffing and blowing like a race horse!!

It will come back. Treat yourself as you would a horse that had been off for six weeks, and do slower stuff in your lessons for a few weeks or even don't have lessons for a few weeks, just build up hacking first..

Swimming will increase your aerobic capacity quicker than anything. Pilates for core strength, which will allow you to 'do less' when you ride. Cycling for all-round fitness. All of these are kind on your joints, generally, and very useful if you aren't riding enough to become really riding fit.

Oh, and don't hold your breath when you ride! ;)

I'm currently using an I joy exercise machine. It simulates the gaits. Pricey but probably cheaper than gym membership that would be wasted , on me anyway.
Only allowed to use it in walk for now , it's like a nice active walk. All the physiotherapists at my spinal injuries unit agreed its a heck of a tool for core strengthening.Just check with your doc that it is suitable for your specific condition before trying/buying.
