I am in agony after ANOTHER fall from my lad (bucking from sheer excitement) and wanted to try a poll to see what parts of the body people usually fall on - with me it is ALWAYS my head???!?! Maybe it is the heaviest part? I have only been riding for 3 1/2 years and have got through about 9 hats?!? eeek.

crikey... umm, i've only landed on my head once, thank god. i was very very lucky that i went to a riding school where they taught us how to fall off. *touches wood, crosses everything*
i usually land on my feet or my back/bum, i think.

Usually my shoulders and then roll onto side/bum.
Worst was when I landed pancake flat on my back over a ridge- not great for your pelvis.

Come on then Kerilli - tell me how to fall off PLEASE!!! I have bits floating around my eyes due to that many bangs to the head. yuk

Well I have found in my extensive experience of falling off it actually depends which horse I am riding.....lol! When I use to come off my pony I nearly always landed on my head or a shoulder...when I fell off my horse, I mainly landed on my butt... except the couple of times it involved flying into a cross country fence then it was always my back that got the brunt of it... my theory for why I landed differenetly from each horse was the size difference coming off a 16.3 compared to a 14.2 gives you more time to rotate and land on your bum... when I got another 16.3 horse, I can't really tell you if my theory was correct because I usually hit the ground so fast I can't remember which part of me hit first...just that it hurt ALOT everywhere!! I am definitely much safer on the ground, letting someone else do the riding

I have fallen off on my back and my arms, I tend to break them lol. I had a bad fall and landed on my knees my god that hurt a lot. I tend to flip over the horses head when I ride and land on back or feet if I fail that my knees lol.

i don't know if i can tell you how... i was lucky that they taught us as kids, rolling us off a barrel in a deeply-bedded stable. umm, relax once you realise it's inevitable, i think, but retain a bit of tension in your neck so that your head doesn't snap back and hit the floor. hope that makes sense!

The only time I have fallen off in the last 3 years I landed flat on my back and damaged the sacroilliac joint - I am in fairly constant low level pain from it still - you don't fall so lightly when you are older

I haven't voted because its varied so much

I have hit my head many times. Don't be so sure that landing on your feet is a lucky thing. After too many falls landing everywhere but my feet, I finally managed to land on them last time (over a year ago now - touches wood, previously has been several times a year). Landing on my feet caused me to break a bone in my foot, tear the ligaments in my anckle and damage the tendons up the side of the ankle and calf. I was in plaster for 3 weeks, couldn't ride for 5 1/2 months and it still gives me trouble!

I usually attempt to land on my feet but nearly always loose balance and end up on my bum. I hit my head once when I was about 13 in quite a bad fall when horse bolted, and banged it a few months ago when I landed on my bum then flopped back and wacked my head. Oh and one other nasty fall when my horse bucked while I was riding another, kicked my knee and I had quite a bad fall. And the other day I went flat on my front after landing on my feet but I kept hold of the horse who carried on going.

I would say I nearly always land on my bum.

Hope you feel better soon x

Only ever had injuries to head and neck and more recently though not a fall hand. Hospital said a small fracture is likely so am bandaged as I type!

Oh and sometimes fall on my bum!

My arm twice- Bent it banana style both times. Head twice, once i got little stars and once i don't remeber as the air ambulance extracted me from the XC jump. Normally bum/lower back though!

Nope Pagan, I'm with you - it's the head every time. I've been concussed more times than I care to think about!! Last time was in August and had to go to hospital overnight. Worst thing waws, he didn't even do anything - so embarrassing!!

I usually land on my bum because it is where I'm widest

However, even with extensive padding in this area, I still managed to get a compression fracture of T12 as all my vertabrae got shunted up & squashed from the impact - ouch!

When I realize that Iam falling I relax, and go into a ball. However I always land on my right shoulder. I now get quite regular inflammation to that shoulder

Well prob not wish for lading on feet then!! Dont wont even more broken bones tha I have!!! Bum seeems more favourable so ar*e it is from now on!!!!

Dont land on your feet! I did this in November and broke my leg in two places and displaced my ankle. Have had two operations and wont be riding for a while!! Not lucky.

Next time I plan to land on my ass....plenty of padding! either that or not fall off.

I usually land on my bum, I would agree that coming off a bigger horse you have more time to think about it, I don't let go of the reins, it's not a conscious decision I just don't, which I think tends to direct my bum downwards first, fortunately ben seems to know when I am going and slows. Pleased to say I have only fallen off once in the last 2 years but with a previous horse I did end up with concussion, fortunately that meant I couldn't remember her kicking my knee which swelled up like a pudding and was very painful.

Head - concussion and hospital, new hat. Shoulder - hospital coz chipped bone. Ribs - hospital coz couldn't breathe 2 days later. Face and neck - hospital on a spinal board coz almost broke neck. Arm - hospital coz thought broken. Bum, back, hip, ankle, foot (feet), wrist, finger and thousands upon thousands of finger NAILS! I think the bit that most hurts when I come a cropper is my PRIDE though! PS - I try to vary the hospitals I go to so they don't think I'm one of those attention seekers!

Bum - fortunately well padded at the moment. My guy has had me off 3 times in three years (at nicely spaced intervals) by his killer spook - he jumps out from underneath me and I get launched sideways. Have survived so far!

Box of frogs I know what you mean - two years ago I went to A&E nearly every week - the receptionist used to say "fallen off the horse again!"
