Rider Injuries

gosh there are a lot of us

I badly fractured my ankle both tib and fib plated |& pinned, ankle then collapsed and I had to have a total joint replacement

also suffered

prolapsed discs
fractured rib
lots of nasty bruises (like most of us)

Cracked forearm - horse slipped on the road;

Bleed on the brain - fast canter, horse went left, I didn't;

Broken back - don't ride when not feeling well! And certainly don't jump. And definitely don't land on one's feet!

My friend broke a vertebrae by falling of after xc and was made to walk, some distance, by herself to the ambulance by her college lecturer...

Haven't fallen off in about 8 years now? *Touch wood!*

When I used to jump I reguarly dislocated my fingers and thumbs. Had concussion from falling off/getting squished/falling onto things a number of times. Sprained my ankle a few times as well. Thankfully, nothing more serious than that!

Riding injury:

Broken fibula - Horse slipped and fell on my leg
Badly sprained ankle - Spun off and landed on my feet!!
Chipped ankle bone/ Heavy bruising - Unceremoniously dumped onto XC fence
Many other buises and bumps of lesser significance!

Handling horses from the ground:
Ruptured anterior cruciate ligament - Walking box rested horse in hand
Split cheek - Rearing youngster (Husband not me)
Fractured skull and bleeding to the brain - Trampled by 2 yearlings (Husband not me)
Fracture to scaphoid bone in wrist - Foot trimming (Again accident prone husband!!)

From Riding that required hospital treatment:
Fractured right hip - got bucked off riding without strirrups when pony spooked and hit arena fencing.
Slipped Disc - general wear and tear + fall from baby hitting back rail of a coffin + second round on extremely strong and pulling open horse = back muscles in spasm pulling out disc.
On the ground:
Broken many toes from being tramped on, one very spectacularly splitting the big toe open which needed two hours in A and E to piece it back together.

Myself (just the worst ones!!):
broken collar bone, frac. shoulder, concussion, broken foot, twisted knee (ligament damage)
all done at home/hacking
Kids:
broken collar bones (2), concussion (3), broken jaw, broken nose
again at home or hacking out, one collar bone was at a games practice!

I seriously don't know how some of you keep riding after some of the injuries you've had!:eek:

I've been very lucky and only broken my nose, and that wasn't even in a fall, just a dirty stop at a jump! I do have a weird clicky elbow from a fall as a kid - only clicks in certain weather conditions so quite a useful barometer :D

Broken foot (5th metatarsal) - fell off, foot twisted in stirrup.

Broken hand (2nd/3rd metacarpal) - kicked by friend's mare (not sure if that count's as a "rider" injury though!)

Many and varied cuts and bruises, that I can't remember the specifics of!

Wow, I wonder whether between us all we would have a record for the most injuries to a human being!

So the obvious leader is collar bone followed by concussion, broken ribs and broken ankles. Food for thought that, I'll go and start my essay now. Thanks guys!
