iv just rang nfu who insure my horse and asked if i was insured to ride any ones horse as il be doing it for money through the summer and he said that aslong as there horse is insured thats all that matters.
is this correct? i dont really think he was listening to what i was saying so not sure wether what he said was correct. any ideas. im just about to print my leaflets off so anymore info appreciated.

That may be right for public liability as it normally covers any horse that you are in charge of. But check, you can read the policy wording yourself within the documents. Also check that it doesn't exclude you from doing this for reward.

If you are going to be riding for work I would suggest that you take out personal accident cover too.

can i take out the personal accident cover in my horse insurance as im prety sure when i read through it that personal accident wasnt covered along with a few other. il have a look through again. its all a load of jargen to me. might be worth me getting my friend who works in insurance to look through it.

Yes you can normally add it through your insurance. Or if you are a BHS member it is included in membership.

Are you worried about you getting hurt or the horse?

I'm sure if you're taking money to ride a horse you'd need a special policy to cover you in the event of the horse getting injured while you were riding it (in the scenario where the owner doesn't want to use their own and sues etc).

ahh i might just become a bhs member then. so if i get gold membership then im likely to be covered riding other people horses if something does go wrong?

I'd check that it still applies if you're taking money for it.... and as it's only personal accident and 3rd party liability I don't think it would cover any damage to the horse.

both. i will be hacking horses to so want to make sure that if me or the horse get injured theres cover. and if i get hurt because the horse is dangerous or what ever.

In that case I'm pretty certain you need special cover. 3rd Party Liability will not cover the horse you are riding, and the fact you are taking money I am sure will change the validity of the policy.

The BHS Reg of Instructors uses SEIB. Why don't you give them a call and see what insurance cover they could do?

iv just looked at pet plan and they do a riders insurance to which covers quite alot like hospital and dental fees for me and vets fees for the horse if its injured while im riding it. the deluxe one is £96 a year. does that sound reasonable?

I would clarify the fact you are being paid... I know they do a pleasure rider insuance.

£96 may be about right... think I pay about £150 ish with the BHS reg of instructors, but obviously that includes teaching!!!

You will need to check that the BHS insurance covers you if you are payed for excercising horses. I suspect that you will need a special commercial insurance but be aware that you need to have third party cover up to £10,000,000 (not all policies do this level) and a recent court case indicated that this level is required. You should also make sure (by checking the policy) that the owners of the horses you are excercising have this level of cover.
If you are employed to ride out of the premises that the horses are kept in then to comply with Health and Safety you should ensure that you are wearing Hi-Viz to the correct industrial level (as you are being paid and are not recreational). Recreational Hi-Viz is to a lower level. (Personal Protective Equipment Legislation).

I would say you needed a separate policy to cover PA and PL whislt you are riding other peoples horses so if something goes wrong and they sue you, you would be covered.

Your horse policy covers you to ride your horse for third party public liability i.e if you or your horse cause damage or injury to a third party.

A separate policy will cover your to ride other peoples horse for a reward i.e getting paid for it. Think of yourself as a freelance instructor and what cover you would need for this.
