Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone could give me an idea of the cost of rider only insurance and any recommendations of good companies to go with.

I'm with Petplan, they give you more for your money compared to the likes of BHS gold membership which only is 3rd party liability. Petplan give you cover against accidental damage of tack, emergency vets fees (if something you do to a horse means it will need a vet, you're covered), custodial liability- if a horse dies due to negligance/something you've done the owner will get compensation through your insurance. Plus 3rd party liability, injury cover, dental cover. The top policy is about £80/year which I think is pretty good and I've heard Petplan are really good with claims if you needed to claim.

we were with petplan but a friend tried to claim after a road accident and they wouldnt pay out, even though she and the horse were in high viz and it wasnt actually her fault! So we switched to BHS gold!
Having said that we have never had to claim on BHS (touches wood frantically) so dont know if it would actually be any better!

I have a completely seperate insurance with a company called combined insurance. They pay out for any injuries for any sports etc and are better than any rider insurance I have found.

Cheapest way to get this is to become a non-competing member of British Dressage. Full third party insurance for all equestrian activities, including fund-raising with my Shetland and hunting with my big boy.
