Can anyone give me some advice on rider insurance please?
A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to break in a pony for someone and currently have the odd ride on the lady's other horse who is lovely but can be silly. If all goes well then I will hopefully carry on helping this person for the summer - maybe longer. Because of this my mum wants to get me insured in case I fall off or something, it's understandable really as I do like projects and am in the middle of exams (so panicking!). But who do I go with? What would the policy need to include? Mum is a BHS gold member so we have not had to deal with insurance companies for a while.
:)

I thought you got free rider insurance if you bacame a Gold BHS member so surely you could just join yourself.

Failing that the owner of the horse should have a clause in their policy that insures anyone riding their horse as long as they have the owners permission.

Basic rider only policies insure you usually against 3rd party and you can usually add additional cover such as hospital costs or dental costs- you can approach many of the horse insurance providers and ask for rider only cover but there is alot of variation between prices.

When i used to ride a lot of different horses i was covered for the horse (so third party)under the owners policy and actually found myself better off to take out a non-horsey related personal accident policy to cover myself which was only a fiver a month and cheaper than a horse specific rider policy at the time.

However, if you are being paid for your services you enter a whole new level of insurance requirements.

I was looking the other day for my husband and did post here actually, he rides a 5 yr old very green gelding and took him hunting end of last season, plans to hunt him this season.... He isn't paid to ride the horse , looked at E & L and this covered 3rd party, teeth, death, emergency vet and a few others for £32 a yr or something like that, didn't get much response but someone said something and troubles with E & L ??

Thanks for the replies :)

******* - I am not sure about the owners policy (bad I know!) so something may be on there. Mum was debating joining me up to the BHS but was not sure whether it would be better to be insured somewhere else and is contemplating having accident cover on me as if anything, it is more likely I will be the one injured rather than another person at the moment. Had not thought about a non-horsey insurance though so will look into that! And I am not being paid for it, just getting free riding really :)

DevonshireDumpling - After browsing the internet earlier E & L came up but I have not heard good things about them either and definitely don't want to use a bad company. It seems a tad confusing really!
