Now I have myself a new share horse I need to get rider insurance. What should I be looking for and where is best? Is it expensive?

Short and sweet :)

The lady who shares my horse pays about £7 a month, not sure who with. I spoke to the BHS at a show a couple of weeks ago, and they said their gold membership covers sharers to ride people's horses, and that is about £50 a year, and gives you good legal advice too, if you ever needed it. May be worth looking into. Enjoy sharing!

World Horse Welfare has recently intorduced a scheme where you become a member and get rider insurance for free (a bit like the BHS). You do need to be clear what you want the insurance for though - do you mean personal accident insurance to cover you if you fall, or insurance to protect the horse in case it is injured whilst you are riding it. Pet Plan and similar do the former, BHS the latter. I haven't looked at the WHW one nother than seeing it on an H&H newsletter. But make sure you get the insurance you want.

BHS actually offer public liability AND personal accident as a membership benefit. https://www.bhs.org.uk/membership/types-of-memberships/gold-membership

No public liability insurance (e.g. WHW's, BHS's, etc.) protects 'the horse in case it is injured whilst you are riding it.' Insurance for injury to the horse can only be provided by insuring the specific horse for vet fees. You're thinking of public liability insurance, which covers legal fees if the horse causes damage or injury to others or their property while in the policyholder's care (e.g. gets loose on a road and causes an RTA; kicks a car while out hacking, etc.). The amount of cover available and what exactly is covered varies per policy/provider.

E&L always looks good (I've been meaning to sort some for ages and E&L are probably who I'd go with)

Public liability is the main one really, to cover any accidents (to anyone other than yourself) whilst you are riding the horse. Last thing you want is to be sued and have no money to cover it! Between the 2 that E&L offer (Adult and Adult Plus) I guess it depends on if you have kids or not really, if you have dependents then the money for death of rider will be more important. I dont have children and am fairly confident in my own riding abilities so dont feel too nervous about getting injured, knocking my teeth out etc (plus I only do dressage which helps!) so I'd go with Adult. But if you are an eventer for example putting yourself into lots of risky situations then maybe go with Adult Plus. Whatever you can afford really!
