Hello.

I’m currently in hospital with a broken foot following a riding accident at the weekend. The horse slipped on uneven ground and crushed my foot.

I’m going to be laid up for weeks after surgery.

I’ve tried to make a claim on my BHS insurance but have been told- The personal accident cover under the BHS membership only provides cover for the following, Accidental death, Loss of Limb or sight, loss of speech or hearing and Permanent total disablement.

I’m so shocked, I really thought the whole point of having insurance was for this sort of thing.

Make sure you check your policies

This is standard. Accident insurance is very limited and always has been.
If you want something which will pay out for lost earnings it is called Permenant Health Insurance, and premiums are sky high - often around half your salary.

I hope you're ok and make a quick recovery.

Unfortunately as SP says Accident insurance is usually very limited. It's worth talking to a specialist in insurance broker for riders as there are quite a few options and a surprisingly large number of insurers don't cover horse riding or horse related injuries.

I remember looking at Petplan's rider insurance I think it was to get covered in case of loss of earnings, the monthly premium was mad.

Hope you're feeling ok OP!
