Rider like this give the rest if us a bad name

my OH was on his way home from work yesterday in his van and there were alot of riders out. He always passes wide and slow and is very considerate (he is now a horsey OH so is more considerate). He passed some young girls on their ponies all hi-viz'd up and they all said thanks to him.

But, this other woman was on a big horse and just sneered at him as he put it as he passed!! Its not hard to nod and say thanks if you cant take your hands off the reins is it!!!

HOW ARE WE GOING TO GET THROUGH TO IDIOT DRIVERS IF THERE ARE RIDERS OUT THERE LIKE THIS, JUST GIVING THEM AMMUNITION TO BE T055ERS!!!

I know exactly where you are coming from

I sometimes pass riders who do not acknowledge my consideration and I feel like stopping the car and pulling them off their horse ..... I know this would not be recommended and would not help, but I get more frustrated with this ignorance than a naive driver

If I pass rude people who don't say thanks I usually stop and tell them that if they don't say thanks they could really hack off another driver who won't slow down for the next horse they pass.

I know it really bugs me if i'm driving and i slow down for riders and they either just stare at you or ignore you,it doesn't cost anything to either put your hand up or nod thank you.

on the other side you get all the drivers around here that look at you like you shouldn't be ridding on the roads & don't smile or nod back at you

i always try to at least nod to drivers, sometimes i am about ready to kill jay so a smile is out of the question

I know i'm not even going to begin to talk about the drivers around our area, when i hack out it's def a death trap! i've even had my stirupp iron clinked by a wing mirror they get that close!

I totally agree. There are always horses on the road on my drive to and from work, and to and from the stables. Probably half of them thank me. Sometimes I feel like stopping, getting out and telling them to make the effort to acknowledge people who are considerate but I think it will fall on deaf ears. The one's that never nod or thank me always have the same look on their face that says 'I'm horsey, therefore I am better than youuuuu'.

I know it's frustrating but no thank you isn't going to potentially kill someone, it's rude of them I agree but it isn't a law, whereas consideration for vulnerable road users (incl. horses) is.

I agree with everything you have all said but got caught out myself last month.Horse had just started walking out after time off /plus had some bad news that he needed surgery (bit stressed and unhappy) .We were going past large paddocks on my left with horses that normally run straight at the gate as you go past.On the right was farm with lots going on in the yard and big scary wheelie bins in the drive.I always put my hand up nod smile or acknowledge the only time I missed saying thankyou the woman gets out of her car and gives me a earbashing.Sods law I think hope it wasnt me

people like that are just Ar*e oles .... she shud be gr8tfuly ... i always say thankyou and then sometimes even when i am not riding walking to the shop i say thankyou to cars :S :S < always in riding mode ... ? Am not specail at all lmao

Lets just say that she had a flighty horse so she could not take her hands off the reins...
A stiff neck from a fall the previous day.
and recently had botox ... so cant smile lmao x

went out today with my OH and gues what we had a misery rider too!!

My OH isnt horsey and spends 99% of his time in the car as his work takes himself all over, well I was with him today and we passed a girl on a lovely looking Cob. OH passed wide and slow and guess what......NO THANKYOU!! She was riding with Draw reins so maybe couldnt take her hands off the reins BUT she could have at least nodded in acknowledgment, but nooooooooooo..nothing

OH tells me that a vast majority of horse riders he comes across are rude and do not thank him when he slows down....he says if it wasnt for the fact he worries the horses may get hurt he wouldnt slow down.

hey don't want to rock the boat but my stepmum had a condition where one side of her face had nerve damage and she couldn't smile straight.........long shot i know but perhaps she had 'one of those faces'

but yeah it does annoy me when riders don't sat thanks - when i'm riding I don't normaally take my hands off the reins, depends on where i am/what horse i'm riding etc, but i always nod my head and smile
grin.gif
sometimes i make it really obvious and the drivers must think i am a complete nutcase

It is just bad manners to not acknowledge someone who is being considerate to you. I have stopped the car and said something to riders who havnt acknowledged me before now. When I am riding I automatically acknowledge every car that passes me, sometimes Ive done it when the driver hasnt really slowed down that much, its just a habit.

Its the ones riding double JUST SO AS THEY CAN GOSSIP that pi$$ me off. They dont even look at you as they are so engrosed in their conversation. Or the young kids trotting off while turning round chatting to the person behind them. Or the ones eating or smoking or talking on a mobile.
I wish I had made these up but I have seen everyone of them in my area.

No doubt a number of you here have probably encountered me and my vehicle.
As for riding double...I admit I do it on a regular basis, and always ride on the outside!!! Yes I chat to the people I ride with....
1) It's a cracking way of ensuring your not forced into the gutter by a cretin with no driving manners.... they are forced to pass wide... before you question this..... how many mounted officers do you see ride in single file on the road.... exactly.. it's the training
wink.gif

2) I hate having to shout so I can be heard!!

If I pass a rider wide and slow...I don't at any time expect to be thanked...we should all appreciate how difficult it can be at times to be in full control of the horse. Yes a smile and a nod is always appreciated....but should we actually expect it??
On the other hand, if I get ignored or a reaction that was un called for...once in front of the rider...they get a pleasant message flashed up on the screen in the rear window....
Try a smile, you'll feel better next time!!!!
My other car is a horse too!!

This normally gets a huge grin in the rear view or a cheery wave!!
grin.gif

However...if your playing silly buggers on the road, a more cautionary message you shall meet!!

I'm always polite when people are considerate and put my hand up and/or smile. I also feel that other people could do the same, if you are considerate to other road users a polite acknowledgement costs nothing.
