Hey,

I've just take on a horse to share 3 days a week. I now need to get some Rider Insurance... he's all insured, I just want some extra insurance for me, when I'm riding him, and when I ride any other horses.

With my share horse, I would only be doing some hacking, local XC schooling, local shows, SJ, Schooling, Lunging, the usual, nothing particularly 'high risk'....

Please can you tell me who you would recommend?

Has anyone got the Gold BHS Membership with their insurance? How has that worked out for them?

Thank you so much in advance....

I had Gold BSH Membership from been 9 yrs old to been 18 - when I was 18 my horse fell on me and broke my pelvis which put me in hospital for a number of weeks. Insurance wouldn't even help pay for livery whilst I couldn't work/ look after them. Infact they state they won't ever pay out unless you lose a limb or die.
I only have insurance now for public liability and I have that in with my boys insurance.

You would need to check this but I was told that the Rider Only Insurance offered by BHS (and Petplan), is not valid for shares if you are paying a contribution.
I don't know enough about Insurance to say one way or the other but it would be worth checking.

BHS gold membership rider insurance isn't intended for if you have your own horse. That should be covered with your horses insurance. The petplan/BHS insurances do say this in the T&C's

offering quality horse insurance for the past 17 years but we also recognise the need for riders to protect themselves against the risks involved with riding, even if they don't own a horse.

Petplan is great, covers you for horse injury, 3rd party liability, tack damage/theft when under your responsibility, dental and incapacity fees if you injure yourself, custodial liability (if the horse dies due to something you did the owner will receive a payment of £2000 or £3000 depending on which level of cover you get).

A lot of people recommend the BHS Gold membership but I personally wouldn't as it ONLY covers you for 3rd party liability and is £55 a year. Petplan is £87 a year for the top level and £65 for the lower level and in my opinion well worth the money for the extra benefits you get.
