Hello,

I know its been done a million times but Id love some advice from an outsider view.

My mare is a 14.3 welsh D X arab, with 8.5 inches of bone (at thats at a push). She 14 years old. Im 75kg, so I know that Im probably at her limit but...

Shes out on loan at the min, due to me being at uni, and her loaner is hitting 16 stone. She has balance and can ride, dont get me wrong, but she tends to ride for an hour an night and does jump twice a week. She gets a day off once a fortnight, and thats only been introduced due to her going lame (first time without a serious injury in 9 years) Shes took her XC schooling today and the pics Ive seen shes clearly struggling (why im posting) but I dont know if Im being the worried owner, or if her weight is a genuine concern!

Am I justifed in telling her to lose weight or lose my mare? When she rides in front of me my horse doesnt seem bothered, but shes such an honest mare that shed carry on regardless.

But yes any advice would be beneficial :)

I'm lost why is she still being ridden if she's lame?
And why do we think this is a troll?

sometimes things just dont seem right and you get a feeling about it maybe i am wrong but why would you be riding if the horse is lame and yes i do think 16 stone is to heavy and i am not a skinny but i have big horse leg in each corner girly so OP if your not a troll then i am truly sorry but if you are "bog off"

I agree the lameness thing really got me...I mean surely you wouldn't ride a horse at all if it was lame until it..well.wasn't lame?? And I wouldn't put anyone 16 stone on a little horse like that...

Bit of an awkward issue for you! You see loads of posts on here about 16hh TBs not being able to carry 12.5 st or whatever which I think is ridiculous (unless horse has physical problems etc).

I am 14st and a bit and think it is quite likely that I would be a bit heavy for your horse as although I could ride that sort of size on a hack or something and canter a bit, if I was doing that much hard work and jumping I would be thinking 15.2+ really as a minimum, preferably more.

If you really think she's too heavy I would be really careful about how you approach it.

Well if it was my horse she wouldn't be getting on it, we had ( still have but he's now a retired pet belonging to my mum ) a welsh D x arab and he was no weight carrier though slightly smaller than yours. For my own interest when I had a horse with a back problem I weighed my gp saddle, it was 13 lbs, it was a heavy saddle though. So I reckoned my horse was carrying roughly 2 stone over my naked weight depending on season, I do tend to wear lots of clothes.

Why was the horse lame? And if it's still lame whys it being ridden?

It's common sense really, I have a small pony for sale ( been out on loan ) and no small rider and was asked to ride it for viewing and I refused as I'm too heavy for it. And besides that, being a small pony it's liable to let it's feelings that I'm too heavy for it be known by promptly bucking me off!

My 14.1 heinz 57, who is not overly chunky has carried 16st quite happily, but I wouldn't expect him to do it every day. Think its alright on an occasion, but if she really is that big, she probably should have something else. I was trying to get my mother back to ride the pony on occasion, she was just over that, and refused point blank, saying she was far to heavy, and maybe when she had lost 3st.

Has this lady suddenly put on a stack of weight since you loaned the horse?

I'm guessing you're about to start your uni summer break?

Totally confused about the lameness comment...

I expect this is a troll post, but I'll bite. If your loaner is 16 stone, she will be 17 and a half stone with clothes, boots coat, saddle etc. Do you really have to ask the question?
