Hi

Opinions please:

What weight do you think a healthy 13.2hh New Forest pony can carry at maturity?

Thank you very much.

To do what kind of activity? Is the rider competant and well balanced? Is the horse fit? Sorry to sound like an @rse but it all makes a difference

Thanks for comments. Sorry it was a bit vague.

I have above pony as companion for my horse. The exercise will be very light hacking just to keep her interested and weight in check. I am 5"6 and 9.3lbs. I know I am too tall, but I am balanced experienced rider. I also use a lightweight synthetic saddle to keep weight down. Don't really want to find a child to ride her.

Thoughts?

I ride my Daughter's NF who is a small 13.1, I am about 9 stone and she carries me easily, we only hack lightly just to keep her in work.

I have seen pictures of them being ridden by men in the forest. I think a lot depends on the ability of the rider - how well balanced they are etc. Also age of pony, fitness, type of work, amount of bone etc.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I always find people so friendly and helpful on here. Don't know how I managed before I found this site.

It's also a mine of interesting information.

Thanks again.

Fine indeedy. I'm thirteen and a half stone and ride daughter's 13.2hh cob - with the blessing of vet, farrier, and back man

.

The rough guide is one stone for every hand, depending on horse's build/maturity/age/health and the rider's balance/experience.
