Just had my horse's back done because he still does this strange flying change thing in right canter down long side. Anyway it was sore and has been put right. HOWEVER I have noticed recently that MY hips are uneven, my left hip being stiff... It was ME making him change leg...

SO I did a prelim comp the other night and really made an effort to keep my left hip rolled under me. Horsey went REALLY well, no stiffness in circles, no random leg changes, and got 63% which was with little very practice!

Since then (2 days) I have been in agony! (And quite upset that I have been giving my poor horse a sore back by being uneven myself.) I am limping badly :( and it hurts :(

Does anyone have any experience of this? I do get lower back pain and have fallen on my hip many times... Pilates has helped me so far but today it hurts far more than it has done in the past... Do I get to the doctor or go straight for the private physio??? I know I need clicking back into place. I am also worried as I am 32 and my mum has arthritis in her hips... I don't want to be told I can't ride...

Firstly, you can ride even if you have arthritis as I do and I ride very carefully. Go and see your doctor and then get your physio to straighten you out, have a few days off before riding again so you body can get used to being straight. It will take time but it will be worth it in the end. Don't worry about the physio. and good luck.

I had what I thought was a back problem. Eventually diagnosed as artheritis in my hip (I was in my late 20s) & I stopped riding for years. Having (finally), after many years not riding, had it treated (via a 'birmingham' hip replacement) all I can say is I wish I'd done it earlier. No pain & I can ride again. Go and see your doctor.

I would go to your doc and get a physio to correct you. I have to do this every so often as I had a accident where a horse ran me over and damaged my pelvis and its plays up every now and then. I just have to give it time to settle and go to physio and its been fine so far. I'm infact waiting to got back for more physio as I have a new horse and have been riding more and thats been hurting it.

I had a horse kick my leg in, breaking it in seven places. I have severely damaged my back (happened when i fell on the ground after the kick) and suffered a cracked coccyx and prolapsed discs. I have the beginnings of arthrisis in my left leg and my right ankle. So no matter the prognosis, there is a way around it. However first you need to find out what is going on. Contact your local physio of better yet, a local bowen technician. I have one and he is amazing.

Good luck and i hope you get an answer/solution soon. But chin up, there is always a silver linning :)

I shall be watching this thread with interest...
For no apparent reason last night, my right hip decided to go into spasm and I have been in pretty bad pain since, from my hip down to my knee.

I'm the same age as you OP - fit and healthy except my back which decides to pop a disc semi-annually like clockwork, and an arthritic knee thats been opened up a couple of times. Annoying, as both have been great(ish) lately - and there was nothing to trigger this new episode off last night!

I don't know if I'll be able to ride tomorrow - I can't bend my leg and knee so not sure I'll be able to swing it over the saddle.
Can't wait bear on my right knee either. This is a totally new pain for me and there is absolutely no reason for it!

Not much use to you I know, but just puzzled and needed a moan. :)

id just go straigh to a chiro, i went to docs with back/pelvis/hip problems after a fall, he reffered me to a physio, 3 months later i got an appointment only to have the physio say he knew what was wrong but couldnt remember how to fix it and id be better off going to a private chiro who could do it better!
2 chiros later i found a GOOD one and although itts cost me a fortune its fixed!

I'm currently undergoing investigation for back/hip problems. I've had back pain for about 5 years, but recently started getting pain in my right hip and buttock. I've been to chiropractors, physios, and have just had an MRI of my spine which showed no arthritis or anything which is really strange. But I have never had a reduction in the pain, despite taking ibuprofen like they are smarties. TBH, I think I'm just very crooked. I can walk with a limp because my back/hip hurts, but when I ride or cycle I'm fine. In fact the best sleep I get is when I have done a 20 mile cycle ride! Don't think the worst just yet - go see the doc and I suspect the first thing he will do is send you for physio and if that doesn't help, then for an MRI scan. Good luck, you have my sympathy - back pain has to be one of the worst pains I have experienced as it seems to affect every other part of your body in some way.

Just took horsey for a gentle walk out. No pain once in the saddle! But painful now... It seems my legs have decided they are sick of walking and just want to ride!!! Front of hip feels like it's been knocked and my back is warm!
Got the phone number of a good physio and going to ring tomorrow. They are based at my doctors surgery which is helpful!
So annoying, I was going to do a hunter trial tomorrow :(

I'm 35 and have a dodgy back and hip (disc problems and arthritis in my right hip which causes pain in the butt cheek and all the way down my right leg), I have had this since a teenager. Took up side saddle riding a few years ago, problem solved! Since I've started bare back riding these past few weeks too, I find that helps to ease the pain as well as it helps to gently stretch things out inside with the gentle moving of the horse with no stiff saddle interfering.

Having done the NHS physio thing in the past, I'd personally pay up and look sweet, and go to a practitioner of your choice. If its NHS, you only get the requisite number of treatments anyway, and they then declare you "fixed" and/or having had your alloted portion, and send you away.

I've got lower back pain and go to a McTimoney practitioner (who also treats my horse). I'd ask around local sports/riding people and try and find someone who's well recommended rather than take pot luck as you can throw good money after bad if you're not careful.

Having said this, you might need to go the NHS route initially for x-rays etc just to find out what's wrong, and then wave them goodbye and find a practitioner.

Its about finding what suits you, your pocket and your body basically. I'd ask around your horsey contacts locally; most of us who ride have aches and pains and probably someone you know can recommend a good practitioner.

Good luck. My back/hip/gawd knows where is usually hurting somewhere. A lot of people say to ride longer but I find it makes it worse. Tried a treeless saddle at the beginning of the week and was totally b@ggered after, not a good idea.

Hi. You are describing almost exactly the problem I had last year, causing similar problems in the horse.

As I regularly attend a chiropractor as I have a back problem, I mentioned this on my next visit. The pain in the hip, more so when off horse than on, the hot spot in the back etc. My problem was basically down to pulls and knots in the muscle. He believes a tightness in my pelvis, (the hot spot in the lower back), had worsened over time without my noticing it, I then went and did a a couple of sessions of work with no stirrups and this tightened up the whole hip from this original pelvic problem. I had several sessions on working the knots out of the muscles and daily stretching, at the beginning of the treatment was not allowed to ride for 2 weeks, hard but necessary. It took some time but it eventually cured the problem. I continue with the stretches as this helps to keep the area supple, and if I get a hot spot in my pelvis, I use a cold pack when I can to remove the heat and inflammation.
