Hi there,

I'm self employed and constantly worry about what would happen if i was to fall off and break an arm, or worse, and be left unable to work for any amount of time. I have insurance through the BHS, but am i right in thinking this isn't the sort of situation it would cover. Can anyone recommend any other insurance policies to look at.

Thanks in advance

BHS offer public liability cover with gold memberships, so no this isn't rider cover, if that's what you mean. A quick Google search will bring up a whole host of options I imagine. I have my rider insurance as part of my overall horse insurance, and am with the NFU.
There's a comparison tool in the h&h website too, if you search for insurance it'll probably come up.

If you're an owner get a policy that covers third party and you as the rider, add whatever vet cover/tack/etc. you think and check if other riders on your horse are covered too....shop around online to see what's offered. If you ride other people's horses then look specifically for a rider-only policy to suit you. Good luck :)

You would be better off looking at a general injury / sickness policy as you are self employed. Horses are not the only thing that can make it difficult to work for a time. Also most standard policies of this type don't cover the self employed because your income can be too unpredictable so which ever policy you choose read the small print carefully.

I personal view - you are better off getting something like this through a broker or a professional adviser (my OH is self employed so I have some first hand experience of finding these policies). That way if a mistake is made you still have redress. But you can do it over the internet.

Having had a quick look at rider insurance, I concluded that the policies I was willing to pay for didn't pay out enough for most types of injury to make it worth having. I second the recommendation for a general income protection policy (enduring injuries through risk sports like riding are not excluded).
