RIDERS PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR MANNERS

I don't understand how anyone could drive based on whether they normally get a thank you

I wonder whether the cyclists would think it ok for cars to bomb past them and simply think to themselves 'oh that's ok because he probably got cheesed off by a cyclist at some point'

Thank you or no thank you people should ride or drive with consideration

I think we all agree with you that all road users SHOULD drive or ride with consideration for others. But this isnt always so
I have been trying to find out how we are viewed by other road users, namely cyclists as this was the road user i had a problem with. whether we like it or not all road users are in some cases rude
including us
which im sorry to say will in some cases tar us all with the same brush
So a completely innocent rider may pay for anothers rudeness

No one driver , rider , cyclist or walker is responsible for the behaviour of others if a say a cyclist cuts up a horse because he is miffed by the behaviour of a third party he and he alone is responsible, sensible people do not act rudely to others because of the behaviour of another party that's illogical and stupid.
At the nub of all this is our responsibility to spend time and effort training ourselves and our horses to cope with the modern world so cars etc can pass us with out being hindered in most circumstances .

Having checked with my cycling OH, the reason cyclists don't thank people for slowing down for them is because they don't expect / need you to slow down.
Their bike won't spook.
Their main concern is that you give them enough room when overtaking and don't hit them with wing mirrors/ carve them up when pulling back in.
Their biggest pet hate is people overtaking then slamming on their brakes to take a left turn, why not just wait a couple if seconds.

I'm lucky that I hack on very quiet lanes but I always thank all cars and give a cheery hello to walkers and cyclists. I always pull out of the cars way if I can. I reason that I'm hacking for pleasure, they are trying to get from A to B, it does me no harm to get out of their way.

Thanks for this thread OP! Was out for a short hack today and did a bit along the road - cue me semaphoring and gurning frantically to make sure all the drivers who slowed down (and they all did :)) knew how grateful I was. :)

I wouldn't expect a cyclist to say thank you ( although I notice that moped riders often do) I don't expect to slow down when passing one but as commented above they expect me to give them space. This would indicate they have a pretty good understanding of the space needed to pass something even if not slowing down when passing a horse they should give it space at least

WelshD. I agree. All people overtaking ( no matter what or who they are overtaking) should give sufficient space.
My post was simply to clear up why drivers weren't being thanked by cyclists for slowing down ...they don't need to (unless the traffic conditions require it)

Actually just to add (can't edit on phone) if you are driving a lorry cyclists would appreciate you giving them more room than normal, simply because a lorry speeding past can cause a cyclist to be sucked towards it. A pretty scary experience for a cyclist.

Yesterday we took a fairly green pony out for a hack with my grown up pony as a nanny - I don't think I've ever seen so many motorbikes and cyclists on that lane before but they were all lovely, especially the last lot on motorbikes who slowed right down and acknowledged us acknowledging them. It quite restored my faith in humanity actually :D

(shame about the man in the middle of the field whose dog legged it across the field onto the road to chase us - thankfully neither pony cares about mad dogs without a recall and luckily there weren't any motor vehicles around at the time  )
