Starting a thread from the 1 below,i will not pass comment as it will turn into a major rant, lol!Interested in other people views though!!
I ALWAYS raise my hand to thank drivers that slow down,if not safe to do so i turn and nod my head and smile,however.....I(being a rider myself)always slow down for horse riders,i have lost count of the amount of times around our area that they are too pig ignorant to acknowledge this in any way, there is no wonder that normal people get pissed off with showing their respect for you and not getting any appreciation for it!!I get fed up with it and i own a horse and know how dangerous the roads are,as much as i would love to say bo--ocks i am not slowing down for you,you ungrateful g-ts,i respect horses and understand their natures.......Normal townsfolk do not!!!!Sorry had to post as i hate ignorant horse riders, they tar me with the same brush!!

Ok tiny rant,lol!!

I too always thank drivers and appreciate it when rider thank me for slowing when I pass them, but........................................................................................
Why is it riders are EXPECT to thank drivers, yet cyclist aren't????

To be honest,i tend to call them absolute pratts as i drive past.....but it is their life thay gambling with!My concern is the danger inconsiderate riders are putting us considerate riders in because people are getting peeved with slowing down and not getting any acknowledgement for it,be it a smile, seems like to much hard work for some!!!

Dont know about that but cyclists i have met usually shout hello or i have seen them before and shout hello to them,my lad ok with them as he sees them 1st(not sure if that what ya mean, lol)!!Society see cyclists as the norm, the days of horses owning the road are gone(shouldnt be,they been around alot longer and protection on the roads should be better)!!!!I have seen soooo many kids out hacking that have no clue, when their horse spooks they have no idea of the lateral movements that could save their lives, they make ponies turn toward the object, which in turn turns their ass out into the road which then gets hit, they should be aware of basic school movements as in shoulder in,you see something ya horse gonna spook at you do shoulder in,if they jump it is then into the hedge!
frown.gif
They should all be made to take ride and road safety!

No but they still slow up other road users, thus why are they not expected to say Thank-you

I thank COURTEOUS drivers if I am on my horse or my bike. I have a permenant grin on some days as if Ikeep taking a hand off the reins its going to get dangerous with like a car going past ever 5 secs.

However, if someone is rude, or drives close on purpose (I let learners away with it a bit as they are new/scared) then they get my wrath - which can vary from tounge sticking out, to hand gestures if they really take the piss! A few years ago I will admit to carrying chuckies - I wont say what for tho but there were a few VERY deserving folk that received them!

Yes and yes!!!!Obviously dont shout out window, lol!!!Anybody that uses the road should take a test!!Lost count of the amount of times i have nearly run over a cyclist, but i was asking opinions on horse riders not cyclists!!!If needs be i will post a seperate thread for cyclists

No, but the person on it can. I now bike about 3ft in from the kerb as I have had some close shaves, adn also I dont think drivers get how slippy the road paint is when wet.

I was thinking the other day - gloves with a big smiley face on the palm, so you can just put your hand up and its a smile!

I respect you guys that cycle, and always give wide berths, but was trying to get opinions on horse riders?????
grin.gif

ps,you could be onto something there, design a pair of riding gloves with it on!!!!Seriously, make drivers chuckle!!

We thank drivers for being courteous and understanding and passing our horses slowly. We do not thank them for allowing us to add ten minutes to their journey. We want them to pass as safely as they can for them and us. You can pass a cyclist at any speed so long as it's safe.

YOU might thank drivers for that, I thank them for slowing down and any delay I may have caused them. I'm guessing you DON'T drive.

I like to think that my thankyou and smile makes them think it was worth slowing down or having to sit behind me for a few minutes!
grin.gif
I know when i get thanked it gives me a bit of a buzz that it was appreciated!
smile.gif

I know, I was just saying how I treat the two as the same really. If someone is nice be nice back etc. But yes, unfortunately there are some that can give a bad impressions for the rest of us! I passed 2 the other day - 2 horses going the opposite direction to our 3. Not only were they rude to cars, but to us as well - charming eh!

I think that what other road users do (like cyclists) is totally irrelavant...it is not about well they don't so why should we! It is about saving your own skin and that of your horses and being polite so that hopefully drivers will remember and be nice the next time they meet a horse rider. Horses are un-predictable and large bulky things to have to pass on any road, it is not easy passing them as a driver, particularly on country lanes when you have to drive on the wrong side of the road to get round horse riders.
I don't understand why some riders do not thank you when you have slowed down and passed wide and slow! I have passed a few that could not thank me because they were on their mobile phones!!!
I have always been a firm believer in using my common sense on roads and if I hear something coming I get out of the way if at all possible so the driver does not have anything to overtake as such. I thank every driver no matter and even on the rare occasion someone does whip past a bit fast, I thank them too because they may well put two and two together and sow down a bit for the next rider.
Pet hates of mine are:
- Riders that continue to ride two abreast idling along knowing full well I am sat behind them in my car stuck
- Riders on mobile phones completely oblivious to all around them
- Riders that do not thank me when I slow down and pass wide and slow
- Riders that do not wear high viz on roads
- Riders that feel they can 'slow traffic down' by veering out from the edge of the road and using their horses as an obstacle
Just my opinions though before I get jumped on!!!

I've passed people who haven't said thank you to me fo sowing down and passing them wide and slow (and turing my loud music off in my car) who haven't botheres to acknowledge the fact that I did (not even a smile) so I have simply pulled in in front of them, got out and told them how rude they were andthe next time they don't thank a driver who had slowed down they migh speed past the next horse they meet and poentially kill somebody.

same here i also had a go at one numpty riding her bay horse alongside a hedge in failing light in dark clothes with no hi viz.......

I always thank the drivers that slow down and pass wide, but if the horse doesnt slow down i yell at them, and note down their number plates - i then pass it on to friend in police
laugh.gif
for speeding!!

got a numpty driving very fast in a tractor and trailer around a bad corner, saw us and he sped up!! so i used a little gesture, and got his number plate - he slowed down the next time i saw him and i thanked him then!

I thank people who are courteous or considerate, I ignore those who aren't - shouting at them or giving attitude does nothing to improve the general populations (dismal) opinion of riders on the road.

Plenty of riders on the roads don't exactly help themselves and continue to give the rest of us a bad name,

I always thank the driver when they are either coming towards me or quite a way behind. This way i know they can see me thank them. I think as a driver it's very easy to miss a nod or even a wave if its done at the wrong time.

I have been screamed at by a driver for not thanking them which in fact I had done they had just not seen me. I nodded at the time they were looking ahead, simple.
A nod is a very quick movement and easily missed as most sensible drivers will have there eyes on the road and horses body rather than the rider. In fact unless its a very small pony there is quite a few seconds as you pass the rider that the rider's head cant be seen by the driver, if you are in a normal road car. So if they nod at that time they will appear not to have done. Hence I would never shout at a rider who i havent seen acknowledge me. I prefer to believe I have missed it!

Next time you drive past a horse just try to think about the amount of time you spend looking at the rider and where your eyes are the rest of the time. I think you will then realise how easy it is to miss a nod.
smile.gif

I am not saying that everyone who has commented missed the nod as I know some riders definitely don't bother. I just think sometimes as drivers we dont always see it.

However if I have been behind another car and have clearly seen that the rider did not acknowledge that's different.
mad.gif
And driving a landrover it is really easy to see if a rider has acknowledged! Maybe that's why I rarely encounter rude riders!
smile.gif

And riders with mobile phones really wind me up!!!
mad.gif

I also thank people who are courteous and make a point of saying thankyou loudly if they have a window open. If people dont slow down I usually mutter rude words to myself!! Or glare!!!

agree.
riders with no hats are always the worst.

[/ QUOTE ]

Hang on! I often don't wear a hat when I'm riding out (depending what I'm riding) as I ride in a very rural area where I don't meet a lot of traffic & I excerise my freedom of choice not to wear a hat because I am very prone to migranes & have found hats can make them worse (no, I'm not starting that debate as it would be a whole different thread which I know has been done 1000 times before). I ALWAYS say thank you to ALL drivers as they have to practically stop on the single track roads I ride on & it is just common courtesy. Please don't tar us all with the same brush!

It drives me mad when people don't say thank you too. Or people that ride 2 abreast because they are obviously just chatting (not on anything young or spooky) and can't be bothered to move over as IMO this is damn rude. What about people who ride along dark country lanes when the light is poor without any hi-viz kit at all & expect cars to slow down for them? I might not always wear a hat but I ALWAYS wear my hi-viz coat!

Oh yes! We have been saying that for yonks! Theres loads of horses round us and so many of the riders don't thank drivers that slow down for them. we all get tared with the same brush and end up getting towed into ditches (or worse) by spooked nag
mad.gif

I tend to thank drivers who approach from behind me after they have driven past me, as I know a thanks is easily missed when driving past a horse. However I have sometimes thanked people as they are behind me especially if the horse is being a bit difficult unforuntly a few people have thought that it means that they can come past, so try to squeeze past so now I only thank when they are away from me and can see me through the mirrors (although I do sometimes thank as they pass me aswell....surley they can't miss it both times).

One type of rider that hasn't been mentioned which really annoys me is the ones who never check behind them, I have been driving behind two riders before (for a while) and not once did they check to see if there was anything behind them.

I hate the way that drivers get so pissed off with us because they have to slow down, when technically we have right of way and we arent driving a polluting machine (even though thats hypocritical cos i drive :S) But i am still curteous, i was always told by my instructor that if you dont thank cars they will ban riding on roads!!cheeky trick-i went around thanking any car that passed me being it speeding, on the other side of the road etc etc lol!

But so what if they slow up other road users?! So do tractors etc. As a car driver, you have to accept ALL other road users no matter what speed they go at!

I dont hack anymore as its too risky, but used to all the time and would ALWAYS raise a hand and smile at anybody who did slow down. However, I seriously hate the attitude of the odd driver who thinks horses shouldnt be on the road because we dont pay road tax - WTF?! Do cyclists / walkers pay road tax?! I drive two cars, I pay my bloody road tax that way!

TBH Ive found some cyclists to be the worst, they creep up behind and dont yell out they're approaching. Had a horse bolt with me because of this which left him petrified of bikes after! Although, *most* are very nice.
