Riders that have NO common courtesy????

This is my major pet hate!!

the amount of riders I've sat behind for what seems forever till it's safe to pass that haven't thanked me is crazy!! I am always very tempted to get out and say it's people like you that cause me problems with cars not slowing down and spooking my mare, I manage to say thank you to every driver on my some what spooky mare why can't you?

My other pet hate is people riding in poor light, i left my yard one morning, still dark enough to warrant lights but just lighting up and nearly went straight into the back of two girls on dark bays, dark clothes, two abreast gossiping!!

It's making me mad just typing this!

I think that we will all have to face that its never going to please everyone!

Drivers would like riders to move over - but the side of the roads can be hazardous (dog [****], broken glass, metal, drainege ditches)

Riders that slow up cars until they can get to somewhere to pass - maybe the horse cant trot on the roads?

Riders who dont look back - sometimes people do concentrate so much they forget to look back, and especailly dependant on wind direction you can hardly hear some of these new cars.

Like I said before I thank drivers, I nod and smile and wave at all that deserve it - those who aren't to courteous get a nod, but a not so friendly face. If they are really rude they will get a gesture!

Now not getting at younger people here (im 25 so hardly old or young) but I do think that younger people seem to care LESS when they ride on the roads. Especially those with parents who don't really care what they are up to. Where people are from plays a big part to. Thankfully the kids at our yard are very good - kitted to the max in high viz.
I don't ride like I own the road, but you have to be assertive and defensive as well as Courteous. I ride like I drive - personally since I passed my driving test and have been driving more I find it disconcerting not being able to have a mirror to see behind me when I ride out.

I think that there also need to be more adverts on tv to show the dangers - I seem to remember one a year or so ago. No one seems to be bothered or interested in it though - much like cycling proficiency now. People will complain, but refuse to do anything. Does anyone know of a main group/website etc that does - one that is well known to NON horse people?

I mean, if you ask the average non horse owning car driver who could come off worse in a crash they would probably say the horse, not thinking/knowing that a horse landing on the roof or windscreen of a car can easily crush it and seriously injure or kill the driver! My car is roughly 900kg, if I rolled it the roof would be squashed flat - if a 500KG horse and my car collided rolled over the roof I would be crushed.

Why is it riders are EXPECT to thank drivers, yet cyclist aren't????

why is it riders get screamed at for riding 2 abreast and cyclists dont. IMHO they are more likely to cause an accident!!!

We thank drivers for being courteous and understanding and passing our horses slowly. We do not thank them for allowing us to add ten minutes to their journey. We want them to pass as safely as they can for them and us. You can pass a cyclist at any speed so long as it's safe.

YOU might thank drivers for that, I thank them for slowing down and any delay I may have caused them. I'm guessing you DON'T drive.

so long as drivers are thanked does it really matter what it is for? Is it really that important?

Maybe i live in an area that has a high ratio of courteous riders and drivers... I have never not been thanked by a rider.

I always thank the drivers that slow down and pass wide, but if the horse doesnt slow down i yell at them, and note down their number plates - i then pass it on to friend in police

for speeding!!

got a numpty driving very fast in a tractor and trailer around a bad corner, saw us and he sped up!! so i used a little gesture, and got his number plate - he slowed down the next time i saw him and i thanked him then!

How delightful..

Me and my boss have been out hacking before and actually had a go at some girls that we saw hadnt thanked a driver for stopping for them!

I've had a go at riders too when I've not been thanked as I always thank drivers!! A simple nod of the head is not hard. Its just as you say common courtesy

We always thank drivers & cyclists when they pass wide & slow. Either a nod and smile or hand wave ... sometimes both. Also we pull in (if we can) if there are loads of cars behind and it's not safe for them to pass.

I know our girlies have done their PC Ride & Road Safety Test. Am trying to get something for us adults though. I always dish out hi viz tabards and we have sheets for the horses when it's a bit dull and we don't ride in failing light ... gosh my halo is shining!!!!

I also give cyclists as much room as I would a horse when overtaking.

Agree that there are plonkers on the road and it's not the ones you think they would be.

The only problem with waving at a driver (and the same is true when 1 car driver thanks another by waving) is that you are reducing your control when you do it. I won't wave at a driver if my horse is being strong as I would rather keep him under control!

I believe that the Highway Code says for drivers to pass horses safely and with consideration. Obeying the Highway Code is mandatory, so arguably, a rider has no reason to thank a driver for simply obeying the law.

Agree, I always thank drivers who slow down and get pi$$d off at those who don't! I think it goes beyond courtesy, I think thanking drivers makes them more likely to slow down for the next horse.
