Does anyone know any good rides near Edinburgh/Lothians where there is somewhere you can park a horse trailer?

We tried one of the old railway lines in East Lothian but it was really hard to get the trailer parked (in fact, if there had been any other vehicles in the car park we wouldn't have got out!).

Had a look at Gullane beach which was said to be horse-friendly but theres a height bar thing which my friend thinks is shorter than the trailer.

And someone told me theres no parking for trailers at the Vogrie Trail either?

Is there anywhere we can go where we can park?! Would also consider going further south than Edinburgh/Lothians if there's somewhere good to go!

Suggestions?

You can park in the car park half way along Braid Hills Road and ride around the Braids.

You can also get a trailer parked at Musselburgh to ride along the beach.

Or visit the borders and do the buccleuch ride , it starts from Bowhill Estate and goes over the hills , its well sign posted so you shouldn't get lost and there is plenty parking.
ps. should have said Bowhill Estate is in Selkirk.

dont bother with musselburgh beach it isnt worth it i hack there about once a week just to get my boy used to traffic but if you want a beach john muir is great, me and my friend do a 12 mile hack near rosewell every fortnight and there is a good place to park the lorry i can find out where exacly it is for you ehm longniddry beach is good not sure where would be a good place to park could always park at the train station lol there is a cracking hack up to faside castle in between elphinstone and wallyford but once again not sure where u could leave the trailer there are a few yards nearby which you could try i suppose pentlands and vogrie are nice hacks erm and you have the railway between longniddry and pencaitland too pm me if you want

John Muir Park at Dunbar is the best!

Take the A1 towards B-on-T and then turn off towards Dunbar at the r'about at the end of the Haddington expressway. Continue towards Dunbar for about half a mile and then go left to the John Muir park. You can ride through the trees and come back along the beach (about 45 mins ride).

Make sure you check the tides before you go (google tides Dunbar) as at high tide it is not so good!!

We do a lot of our fitness work there, and it is great!!

Yellowcraigs beach at Gullane also has parking for horseboxes and is good as long as there are not too many people - go during the week or evenings when there are not so many people around.

There's also Edinburgh Equestrian Centre at Dalkeith which has miles of off road hacking within the estate, you need to contact Liz beforehand and it costs a small amount but is lovely forest tracks etc, plus there's a XC if you like that too.

PS- Punk, where do you park there? I went last month and there were height restrictors for the car park. Ended up parking my trailer in wee dead end roadway between the two entrances and my friend parked in the little layby type bit just at hte same area. Not sure where else we were supposed to park up?

I presume you are asking about the parking at John Muir?!

If so, it has been changed radically in the last year - due to 'travellers- gypsies' taking over the car parking area on occasions!! Can't really blame East Lothain Council for tying to rectify that!!

When you arrive at the park, IGNORE the sign that says to go left for parking.

and park on the left before the height barrier. There is space for about 3 or 4 lorries or trailers there. You do have to leave space for emergency vehicles, but have never found it a problem.

Hope to see you there sometime!!
