My TB threw a shoe today whilst racing round the field
He seemed totally sound whilst being brought in, but seemed tender and a bit 'footy' (understandably!) when trotted up in the yard (was actually trotting him up to check he was not lame from an overreach cut, also sustained during his antics  which as it happens turned out to be totally superficial) but not lame.
My question is, would it be ok to ride tomorrow in the school (provided he is still totally sound)?
I'm just not really sure, haven't really been in this position before as the shoe has either been put back on the next day (lovely farrier :D ) or the horse has been lame from pulling the shoe off, so unable to be ridden anyway!!

We have 2 TB who seem to throw shoes quite a bit! We still ride them in the school, and they are fine with it. Just see how it goes, you'll be able to tell if your horse starts to feel too sore on it. :)

if he's sound then i would ride in the school. my 5 year old has thrown the odd shoe and i have even jumped him without one (he doesn't even need shoes really and only has fronts anyway)
my TB on the other hand is dog lame without a shoe on so i wouldn't ride him

As long as he is sound I would be happy to ride in the school. I tend to find that it is less of a problem if it is a hind shoe rather than a front shoe.

Some years ago my horse lost a hind shoe the night before our first affiliated dressage competition. I was a little concerned as the car park was quite stony but it did not seen to bother him and then he went on to win a large qualifier with just shy of 70%.

Yeap if hes sound then yea id ride in the arena :) unfortunatly when mine throws a shoe he hobbles along as if hes broke something

Hmm it is a front shoe he's lost..
Obviously didn't affect your horse then! :)

Yea I am surprised my TB hasn't made more of a fuss as he is a bit of a diva lol. Though with the amount of self harming he does racing round in the field I guess he is used to having to man up ;)

I wouldn't be able to ride in the school or otherwise if either of my TBs if lost a front shoe, they would be doing their dying swan act! Probably could get away with no back shoe in arena. Know it's a pain but personally would get blacksmith out asap and not do much til then. It's just not worth making them sore

See, my horse lost a shoe in the go around of riding horse class at a county show - a front one.

He has good feet and was sound so I kept going and was pulled in, I got off and checked his foot for warmth and foot was stone cold so continued. we were pulled in 2nd!!

I also jumped the open workers course with 3 shoes, but it was on lovely old turf and perfect going and we jumped clear :)

Would you walk around with only one shoe? No, well why would you expect the horse to be comfortable doing just that? The horse is bound to be unlevel, so you would be asking for trouble.

Yea have texted and rung farrier earlier, just waiting for him to get back to us. Hopefully he will be able to stick it back on if he is in the area.

I wouldn't ride my horse if he'd cast a shoe. Front or back, lame or not. With one shoe off a horse is unlevel and working it as normal could cause all kinds of problems
