Has anyone here ridden in a snowy field in this weather? Is it alright if it's sort of crisp and doesn't look/feel icy? Was thinking of trying it in the morning. Am I wise? I've read articles about putting vaseline inside the hoof to stop the snow balling up, does it work? Roll on summer!! Or even bloody rain for a change!

LOTS of vaseline or some similar sort of product in the hoofs to stop snow balling up and you should be fine...just go careful because you don't know whats underfoot.

my horse is shod but i don;t bother with any of that - just get on and go and i find the snow balls up and falls out every so often... i'm schoolign my mare in about 6 inches of snow on stubble fields at the mo in all paces - arena is a nighmare but fields are riding well (i know the fields v well too so know there are no pot holes etc etc

)
i used to do all that jazz with vasaline/salt in vasaline etc etc and was v paranoid until i lived in the US and as they are more used to it they just got on and rode - soon over came my snow fears then

ETA - i said shod specifically because she was barefoot last winter and then you don't have the snow balling problem

I am planning on riding mine later as its not packing snow- we have a very large flat field behind the yard i will probably trot and canter some circuits on the big horse first to see how it feels - I worked my little horse in the deep snow last year it made him sweat in about 5 mins its very hard work for them so i would be careful what you do do with them if you do ride , - oh whatch they dont roll!!

Hi, thanks for replies, I ventured out for an amble around the field, put vaseline on and it worked, though I don't think the snow was as packing in the field. I really enjoyed just being in the saddle again! Ned enjoyed himself too, was really fresh and wanted to go, but I just walked. I would be very careful about trotting and cantering though. xo

It is absolutely fine I just have done 1/2 hr of trotting and cantering and my arms are still aching now were he was pulling them !! But i Wont ride the little horse though as he is coming back from foreleg injury .
