I'm hoping to start riding again in the next week or so after not riding since September and having a cesarean section 6 weeks ago. I feel fine now although obviously much weaker in the lower tummy area than before. Has anyone else had any problems getting back into riding and can you offer any advice?

I will hopefully be riding a friends older horse before I venture on to my recently backed 4 year old.

. I am really looking forward to riding again and am really hoping I won't ride like a complete lump after such a break!

Thanks Katy, that's a good point, after the section OH had to go out and get some non support granny pants for me (he really enjoyed buying those!!), as all my usual ones sat just were the scar is! Some support ones would definately help though.

I did manage to get into my jods yesterday though, they are on the comfy side at the moment!

Six weeks ago today! Emergency c. section after failed induction. In fact everyone I know who's been induced has ended up with one.

Little girl called Alice, going well now, but has taken a while to get me fully back together!

Hey Burtie, hope that you and little Alice are well

I've had four c-sections, and nothing is set in stone.
The recovery periods were different for every one of mine, and the only honest advice I can give you is to listen to your body, and do what it allows you to do, and what you feel comfortable with.
And take your time, otherwise you may think you're okay, then do too much, only to suffer for it the next day.
Good luck with getting back in the saddle.

oh poor you,. I had a C section for my last one (4 kids now) and it knocked me sidewards, didnt feel like riding for a while. If you feel you want to do it then go ahead. Your body will tell you if it is too much. Dont push it if it hurts. Like 'dubble' listen to your body. Its so lovely riding again after having baby. FREEDOM! Enjoy....

I havn't had a c.s but I did have an operation whilst pregnant because my baby had an ectopic twin. I had ridden all through my previous pregnancy but I asked my consultant if it was ok this time. He said the best advice he could give was "if it hurts, don't do it"!
In other words, listen to what your body says.

I would agree with all of the comments above. Do what feels right!!

My 1st C section was awful and took ages for me to feel up to riding.

My 2nd C section was easy (interestingly the Obstetrician looked at my 1st scar and said 'well I hope we can do better than that this time')

I felt great after and was out trying new horses with a few weeks. Only the getting off was a bit sore, the rest was fine.

Good luck x

I started riding again about 4 weeks after my C-section, just flatwork on my old trusted pony who had looked after me up to about 8 1/2months of pregnancy..then a couple of weeks later I started showjumping the bigger horse..that was a mistake! I discovered at the moment of no return that I really didn't have the stomach muscles to get me back in the saddle after a particularly deep upright...

So in conclusion, I think you will be fine riding..as long as you take it steady and build up to more demanding stuff

I haven't had a c section but I did have spinal surgery and a bone graft from my hip. I got back on when I was alllowed to (5 months after op)..... I recommend doing physio or pilates (which I love) - great for strengthening the core muscles. It has really helped me. Good luck.

OMG 6 weeks and you are getting back on? Good for you!!

Crikey I think I got on after 3 months and I felt awful. My stomach just felt hopeless and I felt very wibbly so I decided to turn him away again and got on again properly at 8 months after having him. I felt much better then.

We are all ready at different times. I hope you thoroughly enjoy it.

One thing I am thankful for is my nerves are well and truely intact. Infact I think I am slightly braver now and much more focused & confident.

Enjoy and congratulations on the birth of Alice. It is the best thing ever isn't it?
