This is a bit of a follow up from my last post ('mare with colic') anyway, Ria's home now after being taken into the vet clinic for 2 days, she came back last tues. She's back to her normal self, back out in the field and is a much happier girl. I'm just wondering how long after colic would you start riding again? She's been back out in her field since wed and have lunged her a few times (on vets advice) but dont want to bring her back into work too soon. We dont do much anyway, mostly walking & trotting, but how long would anyone leave her before pottering around again?

No advice from the vets hun? I guess I'd be guided by how she seemed. You could walk her in hand with her saddle on for a bit each day, building up to about a mile and if she seems ok and happy in hand, she should be ok to do a little ridden amble. I'm guessing she didn't have any surgery. Do they know what caused the colic?

No, vet didnt say anything. I've got go there tomorrow though so going to ask them then. She didnt have any surgery, although vet said it was a big impaction. They think it was a combination of things causing it; being stabled 24/7 for a few days due to all the snow, eating too much of her straw and not drinking enough (they have automatic feeders & she really doesnt like them) She's now bedded back on shavings and have turned the feeder off and put buckets in so i can keep an eye on her.

I would have thought that the more exercise your mare gets the better she would be. I know for spasmodic gassy colic its best to keep them on the move, and I have ridden before now when my boy has exhibited gassy colicky symptoms as I know it has made the colic dissapear on its own without medical intervention which must surely be better. I would have thought in Ria's case moving around on the go would be the best thing for horses prone to impaction too but I would be guided by vets advice.
