Question in title really! I'd imagine getting on is interesting. Any tips on holding the reins in the injured hand without using the thumb? I really cannot go another 6 weeks+ without riding. Happy to hack out gently, even with injured hand in sling so I cannot use it if necessary.

I broke my hand and wrist in a fall last year, and had a pot on. I rode pretty much as soon as i'd left the hospital, and it didn't hurt that much. Until i had it took off,and it hadn't healed at all really, so i still suffer now! I suggest waiting until you know it is infact fully healed, and you can bend your thumb easily in all directions, save a lot of hassle later on!

I fractured and dislocated my ring finger, very painful. I was back riding pretty quickly, however it took about 18 months for it to be pain free and feel like a proper finger again.

I didn't use the hand splint the hospital gave me, but I did keep it tightly strapped to the neighbouring finger for a long time.

I broke my thumb into many pieces when I caught it in a machine, couldn't use it for ages but did ride with it stuck in the air!!. You don't realise how important your thumb is until you can't use it. Couldn't even do up a zip, two fingers have no grip strength at all!

I broke my thumb, and riding was super easy!! I didn't realise how little I needed my actual thumb - just put it in the brace the doctor have me and off I went... Even jumped and did games... However everything else, from undoing rugs to doing up girths to trying to sweep up and do up bolts on stable doors was a nightmare.

I've broken/dislocated various fingers over the years, you can ride with your thumb out easy but more likely to jab it on the neck or catch it (again which I did). Stupid me carried on as if nothing happened, now a couple of years later and I really struggle! I'm only 17 and because they didn't heal right they can get so sore and stiff and are just plain wonky really, and my thumb occasionally seizes up. Don't overdo it!

Thanks for the replies, you've convinced me to ride with it in the sling so I cannot catch it/jab it/be tempted to use it! Will leave it a couple of weeks before I try that too. Have just had 6 months off riding and had only been back on board 3 weeks before this happened!
