Hi everyone,

Would be really grateful for anyone's experiences. I had a hip arthroscopy in October and then developed a femoral neck fracture of my hip a few weeks later... So far not had any surgery on the fracture, my consultant is hoping it will heal without. Having a CT scan this week though as it feels dreadful.

Anyway, I was wondering whether anyone has had a hip fracture and how quickly they got back to riding. I have a lovely 4 yr old mare I've broken this summer and keen to start her again in the spring but don't know if this is realistic and can't get much info from my consultant.

Any advice much appreciated!

Not quite the same, but I had a fractured pelvis, and my hip was pushed out by 2.5cm as a result, so similar area affected, it took me 4 months to get back in the saddle, and that was with surgery. Nothing felt strong enough to get before then. A lot of muscle wastage happened while I was off my feet and it took me a good month of weight bearing before I felt happy to hop back up.

My advice is physio physio physio as soon as they will let you! My physio happened to be horsey which was a great help, as she had me doing all sorts of squats and lunges to get my riding muscle back. I swore at her a few times but the first day I sat back up I thought very kindly of her!!

Even the very first excercises they had me do on my bed were usefull, they all said my recovery would have been slower if I hadn't been as proactive doing them myself every day between sessions.

Best of luck with the recovery, fingers crossed you're back in the saddle asap!

unless your consultant is horsey you wont get much info re riding. i havent had a fracture but have had 2 hip replacements and then revision surgery on 1 of them which involved bone grafts in a 3 hour op so pretty serious. i started riding again 3 months after the first 2 and waited 6 months after the revision surgery before starting to ride again my consultants were not very encouraging but i carried on anyway...also i am now 70 so only hacking now.....my sister broke her pelvis in 5 places and it took a year before she could ride again..hope this helps, good luck with your recovery

I broke the head of my femur in a fall in 1991.
It was reattached using a hip pin .
It was never pain free but I rode after about three months and went on to compete at advanced level .
It was always painful it was always hard to walk .
Eventually I had a replacement hip ,marvellous thing .

Thanks everyone. Sounds like it is going to be some time, but great to hear you did manage to get back to riding. Will see what my CT scan says. And then decide what to do with my horse til I can get back on board!!

Broke and displaced my left neck of femur November 2014. It was pinned and I was told I'd be lucky to keep it. I didn't ride and six months or so later it started to really hurt so couldn't ride even if I'd got the ok. Had it replaced just over 12 months ago. 12 weeks post replacement and 14 months post fracture I got back in the saddle. I can now do everything I did before - it's not quite the same as my own hip but it's close.
