Hi All,

3 weeks ago I had inguinal hernia surgery. My recovery has gone well and I was wondering how quickly I can return to the saddle?

I'm an experienced rider, over 40 years with a reliable TB gelding to ride.

Does anyone have experience of coming back to riding after a similar operation? It would be great to hear from you.

i was told 6 weeks..... what did your surgeon say? I would wait until you have had a post op check and ask then...
You are doing well at 3 weeks to feel so good, i was in bloody agony

I didn't ask at the time of surgery, and there are no post op checks unless something has gone wrong.
I've been doing a lot of exercises but don't want any setbacks by riding too early.

Hey @Hedgelayer, just wondered how you got on post surgery? I've got a hernia repair on Saturday and really want to be in the saddle ASAP but obv, don't want to do anything detrimental to my recovery. Dreading it TBH!

Dr / Surgeon daughter told me 6 weeks was a sensible break for any abdominal surgery. She said that one needs strong abdominal muscles when riding and the incision needs to heal well before you use them. I was slit right open down the front with peritonitis. It was winter 2010. I didnt ride for 6 weeks. That was surgeon's orders. Same for after a ceasarian.
I did begin gentle wi fit exercises (including balance exercises) at home in front of the TV.
My first lesson back I mounted and walked the mare to the centre of the school. I felt exhausted and thought to myself they should call for an ambulance. And whether I should trot. What happened is still unexplained. The mare did a walk canter transition - our RI told me it was one of the loveliest canter transitions she had seen. The mare raised her back and we floated.
My advice to you is to take time to heal well. I was 70 and, once I was back riding I remember having one of the best riding summers of my life.
It has always been my rule to ride only when I feel up to it. I was really tired today and cancelled riding.

I hope your recovery is going well and you can get back out horse riding again soon when you feel up to doing it again soon
