How soon after a horse is vaccinated can you ride?

Ponio is being vaccinated on Friday at 3:30pm. These are his first vaccinations (flu and tet) - not boosters.

Obviously if the whole thing stresses him out I won't ride, but if he's OK is there any reason why I can't ride that evening and/or the next morning?

Dubh is always a little under the weather after his flu so he gets 2 days off. The others I ride the next day if they seem fine.

Our vet always says as long as they don't sweat up you are ok - so I can ride mine the next day as it takes a lot to get him to sweat, whereas OH's mare sweats virtually at the sight of a saddle even when she is fit, so she has to have a few days off.
THink it probably depends on the horse! I've always ridden J the next day with no ill effects, but someone I knew ended up with their horse getting an abcess on the site of the injection!

I would always give a horse 24hrs off after an injection, partly so they don't sweat and partly because they may be feeling a bit ill or sore after the jab.

I've always been told to give them atleast 24hrs. Yet have also heard that its ok to ride as long as they don't sweat up. I'd ask your vet when they come just to make sure.

I have ridden to the vets for them to give my horse his vaccination as it saves the £28 call out fee. so obviously i have to ride back aswell.
I just stick to walk and it takes about 20mins

Some people might not agree but if there was a problem with this im sure the vets would have told me not to ride!?!

Mine got a bad reaction to her last jab and actually couldnt get her head to the floor. Realised when she was given her tea and couldnt reach it. Ended up raising her water bucket for 24hours and keeping her in the stable until she soreness wore off. She couldnt have grazed either.

Hers was quite a bad reaction but a much milder one could cause less obvious stiffness. I would leave well along for at least 24 hours now.

I ride mine same day, just no hard work. Aslong as it's not hard work and they don't sweat then they should be fine - or at least thats what I was always taught (hence why hunting horses have their jabs in summer).

you should not ride up to 48 hours after your vaccinations - Archie had his tuesday evening and the first time im riding him since then is tonight - this is what my vet told me. And that is always the rule with the vets at the practice i use.

OK - will double check with the vets as to how long to leave it.

eeek I really hope it's not 48 hours, the fatty REALLY needs exercise!

my ned was vaccinated for flu yesterday afternoon - and I have a lesson this evening - does this mean I should really cancel it and not ride?

the vet didn't mention anything about not riding.

ETS: just phoned my vets and they said that if I do ride not to let him sweat up, to take it very steady for next 2-3 days.

I think ponio has conspired with the weather, the freeze marking company, the vets and the YM to ensure that he is not able to do much work at the moment, as he has been moved to a new field with lots of grass and just wants to eat and become enormous. Think I'll have to brave the traffic tonight to get to the tack shop to get a grazing muzzle.
