Riding and cold feet

Silk sock liners, game changer!!
Wear under your normal socks.
And about £10 a pair.

I did buy some furry lined Shires Moretta winter riding boots this winter and they have been super, about £110

Ditch riding boots (long or short) in winter and use winter riding boots instead with fleecy lining. I've been using Hy fleece-lined boots (showerproof terylene-type calf with 4 straps and neoprene foot, the whole boot is fleece-lined) for past two winters and they are toasty warm for yard work and riding in. Previous winters I used the Muck riding wellies which are neoprene.

I have Shires moretta , and my older ariat insulated , both keep my feet warm when riding , wearing normal riding socks even in minus temperatures.

This is why I ride in walking/hiking boots. My feet are never cold riding now. As soon as I put jodhpur boots or long boots on my feet are darn cold.

I rode out once, and only once, in my hiking boots as I thought they would keep my feet warm. Which they did. The 17hh horse I was on slid right over on a patch of ice as we trotted along on the road. As he got up my chunky hiking boot remained wedged in the stirrup and I thought I was done for as I hung upside down and he took off in a panic, but thank goodness the stirrup leather came off as it should have. Never again.

Yes, this is so important:
soles on riding boots should be smooth not cleated, with enough width either side in the stirrup to pull free in event of a fall.
Most yard boots, country boots and hiking boots are unsuitable for riding. It’s a ghastly accident, thank goodness your leather came free, P.

The only part of me that’s absolutely freezing when riding is my feet! They are like two blocks of ice. 🧊

I’ve tried using foot warmers stuck to my socks and they just about took the edge off. I wasn’t as impressed as I thought I would be with them tbh. I’ve got chillblains on top of a couple of toes so I really need to keep them warm but my feet are always cold.

Any recommendations for anything I can try? Preferably not some boots that are going to cost me ££££ though! 🤣
Not tried these yet but have some nice thermal socks from B&M and happy with them https://www.bmstores.co.uk/products/ladies-heatsaver-socks-stripes-4009402

You must be very unlucky to have done it once and had that happen. Be been riding in them for over ten years now in a variety of stirrups and never had that happen.

I suffer from bad circulation and I honestly wouldn’t be able to ride or even walk much about the yard without my boots. Had a variety of horse yard/riding boots over the years And always had cold feet.

Also many brands have a hiking boot yard boot version that you can ride in, they are the same thing just with extra money for being a horsey brand chucked on top.

Cool max liners or thermal liners plus merino socks, thich or thin as determined by the size of boots, insulated barefoot anatomical (therefore plenty of room) boots plus keeping my legs warm, and I often still get cold feet, like most of yesterday. Standing around on concrete all day is nearly as bad as riding.

I always smile at these posts, so many of the suggestions don't even "touch the sides" for those with the coldest feet sadly.

Yes, I did ponder that myself at the time! They were proper heavy duty Meindl hiking boots with really deep cleats and I think that my foot was wedged into the stirrup as he fell over onto his side. Still, it was terrifying and I never wore anything but proper riding boots after that, albeit of the yard/ riding boot that you mention. Once was certainly enough.

This is exactly how I feel! I’m so fed up with cold feet!

I ride in my Meindl hiking boots in winter and haven't had problems but I do have safety stirrups on. I can testify how good they are when your foot gets leapt on by a spooked pony though.

Ariat insulated boots! I’m a front zip dressage boot wearer through and through however I cannot bear the cold feed after hacking, I thought I would give the ariat bromont boots a whirl and they are fab!

I have had cold feet, most of the time, in the old MH Rimfrosts, and Heatholder socks aren't warm enough for me, flatten quickly and shed microplastics like stink. My Berghaus Thermal liners are over 15 years old, and merino socks last years.

I wear winter riding boots (bigger than what I'd normally wear so I can wear thick socks). That isn't enough for my feet so I take a thick sock and put it over my boot and then over that, put a rubber overshoe over the whole thing. I'm good hacking out in -15C with this set up.

Hmmm, if anyone sees me saddle fitting with apparently size bazillionty feet, this'll be why 😁
