Riding another persons horse - insurance

I think....it depends if money changes hands! If no money and the owner of animal has 3rd party and public liability insurance that should be fine (unless you want to ensure yourself in case of fall/injury)

If money changes hands - (ideally!) you need your own 3rd party etc - but as your being paid it doesn't come under normal bhs etc cover, it's normally through an insurance company.

When I was doing a lot of riding work I was insured to cover the horse should anything happen to it whilst being worked by me.

I pay a small sum weekly and have taken out rider insurance with NFU mutual, think it's about £90 for the year. I went with the insurance that gave me the most if I have an accident - don't want to regret not paying £20 extra!

It would be a good idea to get some Rider insurance.

There was an incident a couple of weeks ago where a lady was riding a friend's horse, with the owner on another horse. The horses got a bad fright and the lady came off and hurt herself enough to be off work for a few weeks. The both thought that the BHS insurance meant that the rider could sue the owner for injuries, loss of wages etc. but that isn't the case. Had the horse run off and caused damage, then the owner would have been covered by the BHS insurance for that, but not for personal insurance for the rider. This took a bit of thinking over, but I can see how it works now.

So if you were going to ride out regularly on someone else's horse it would be a good idea to get your own cover.

Usually the owners 3rd party insurance covers any costs incurred by a 3rd party, regardless of who is riding the horse, as long as they have owners permission & no money exchanging hands. But normally the rider wouldn't be covered for any costs they incur.

So having researched this carefully the 3rd party insurance will cover costs/damage incurred by the HORSE regardless of rider. The rider has NO cover for any injury incurred when riding.

No, third party doesn't cover costs incurred to the horse, its to third parties. Eg horse bolts, damages a car. The car owners costs are covered whoever is riding it. Vet bills should also be covered regardless of who's riding it. But if the rider themselves has to take time off work etc, chances are they'd need to be named on the policy to get their costs covered.
