.... what's it like? We're looking at a possible move and am wondering what the riding is like in the Skipton/Swinden/Otterburn area. Can't see many bridlepaths are the roads relatively quiet? Are there any equestrian centres locally that hold competitions?

Thanks for your help

Craven country ride is local and its not far to Crowood EC that has an allweather xc course and hold alsorts of comps. Aireview in Keighley have quite a bit on too.

Some of the villages round skipton are quieter...... Skipton itself is busy.
You're not too far from the M65 nr Colne (Crow Wood is just off it) and that gets you on into Lancashire (Osbaldeston, Arkenfield, Myerscough)
You can also get on the A59 at Skipton which takes you to Harrogate and beyond (Markington, Birstwith etc)
We travel to these venues from Ilkley which is further away.
We get our horse feed from WCF at Skipton (not Haylage or bedding though).
Can also vouch for Craven Country ride, which you can hire or go to one of their organised events.
Where do you need to be near, and what for - I know some nice areas and not so nice..... although not sure of Swinden / Otterburn, PM me if you like.

Oh, Dalehead vets are good. I dont use them personally as Im nearer another good horse vet, but my friend uses them and she is very happy.

Sorry just wanted to say that it's awesome that someone who lives (might be living) near skipton is on here. Woooh!

Craven Country Ride is amazing by the way :-)

Just to add:

Kilnsey Trekking Centre is very friendly, they have a wide variety of horses and ponies for anyone of any age (above 4) and of any experiance. They do amazing treks, lessons, parties, holidays, pony club etc..

The Pendle Forest and Craven pony club do a lot of competitions and events. You do need your own/loan horse/pony to join though!

Kilnsey Trekking Centre do have a pony club but I don't think they do as much 'stuff' as the pendle forest one does. Although they are very friendly like I said!!

:-)

I'me a bit further over into Lancashire so can't vouch for hacking etc, but the more you get into the Dales, the better they'd be I'd imagine. The new route for the Pennine bridleway will also pass through Kelbrook and Barnoldswick, so not too far away!!

Like others have said, Craven Country Ride is very close to Skipton and a great day out! I try to go as often as possible in the summer as the owners maintain the grounds really well and there are a nice mixture of fences, all of whic hare optional. In fact, I know a friend who goes who doesn't jump at all, but loves the chance to ride such lovely fields and tracks!

Once you're on the A59, it is straightforward to get to other venues in either direction. Osbaldeston is not far, and there are a few small local shows in the area including Ribble Valley RC, Accrington and Distinct RC, Osbaldeston RC, West craven RC to name a few.
