I am looking for some suggestions to share with a male rider. He is going on a riding holiday soon and is a beginner so does not have any of the gear. He had one lesson and was uncomfortable in jeans. He asked for my suggestions on what to wear and other than jogging bottoms and walking boots or similar, there isn't really much choice except proper jods/riding trousers and riding boots.

Does anyone have any good suggestions for men's jods and boots which are affordable and don't look too daunting for a beginner... I think he might feel embarrassed wearing super tight kit!

Many thanks. :)

He could try a pair of mole skin trousers, or similar brushed cotton (I think that's what they're made of). I have ridden in mine and they were fine, but walking boots and chaps are advisable, as I only rode for twenty minutes (& over 14 jumps!) and every single hair on the inside of both my calves was individually plucked out.

Also in the underwear department, a pair of cycling shorts or some nice tight Y fronts will make the whole riding experience a lot less eye watering.

Trouble is, riding clothes are made for riding, and jogging clothes are made for jogging.
Does he know that jockeys wear tights under their breeches, and what is better than looking at a polo player or guardsman turned out so well? Jods/breeches don't have to be tight, I think that is more a female habit!

Well, this is what I tried to tell him. He enjoyed his first lesson so it appears riding will become a regular thing so he might as well purchase the kit. I'm just not sure on what are a good set of jods/breeches for men?

Between you and I, buy him a pair of womens jodhpurs. A. There isn't much difference. B. The tightest pair of jodhpurs I own are my mens ones, the womens ones on me are much looser! C. They're half the price of mens!

My sons ride in ladies jods, with a longer top. When they ride out with other friends (not so horsey) they wear jeans, but always with gaiters and boots, which helps prevent hairs on legs from rubbing out.

My son spent his whole last riding leson in sitting trot, he looked a bit hobbly the first few steps after.
