Riding bareback? sounds daft i know

I always used to ride bareback, road Mickey for 2months when we first had him bareback, and riden bareback ever since. Sometimes I actually feel safer bareback and alot more connected to the horse. And Mickey taught me to stay on with his bucks bareback

. I used to jump him bareback to, ahhh we used to have soo much fun.

And now I ride anything bareback, I ride Tilly (Jen (Ginn)'s 16.2 tb type) bareback, and another little welshie who has gone to a knew home now. It does boost your confidence, and does so much for your balance and seat. Also its very good for teaching you how to use your seat and body weight to move the horse to

When i was younger and at a 'holistic riding school' we did it all the time, in lessons and to the field and it definatley helped me develop more of a secure seat. The track to the field was flat and sandy so we could canter there if we wanted to...one boy cantered down on a high withered arab which he never did again!! My pony does buck in canter (learned behaviour from when he was a rig) so i can walk and trot him bareback but no cantering

I love seeing kids have fun with their ponies - thats what its all about!

My daughter always jumps on bareback to and from the field - but hey she is young and has a table backed horse - I am old and have a high withered boney one!

When I was kid I rode bareback, but looking back at pics, my ponies were pretty well rounded. I tried riding my girl bareback when we were having saddle problems and it was a disaster. She is 100mile fit and thin as a whippet and I am no JLo. I think we spent the whole ride grumbling to each other about how bony we both are!

Have ridden my ponies bareback have schooled and 'jumped' them bare back, was nothing more than a pole really

haven't ridden my horse bareback, for starters I don't think the yard allows it, he has rather bony withers and is soooooooo bouncy it is bad enough with a saddle on so I doubt i will stay on without one!

Just wanted to say how wonderful those pics were, esp the pony jumping without tack!!

I sometimes ride my mare without a saddle, shes a little plump so very comfy

Bloody hell artic fox!! I wouldn't jump that WITH a saddle and bridle on.

To those that do ride bareback, how on earth you get your balance enough to trot/canter/jump (anything more than a walk lol)!

LOL!!!

Wow ArcticFox - thats so cool!!

I used to ride my mare bareback and jump with just a headcollar on when I was a teenager - not sure I have the nerve now though! or the muscles, but I do intend to ride my boy bareback at some point. Back when I was a teenager I could stick like glue, took some practice though!

OMG i love just jumpin on in the field when hes grazing.

at my yard we dont have a sand arena and the fields are 2 wet to ride in at winter so normally me and my sister just jump on our horses with their rugs on and a headcollar and lead rope and ride round the yard, its great fun!

we also would jump on bareback wit just a head collar and lead rope to bring them down the road (about a mile just) to the field when were stayin at our grannys.

I ride bareback around once a week. Much more comfy on my appy than my WB...she's more rounded!

BTW you can buy bareback pads made from suede that take the "edge" off sharp spines and withers and add a little grip. Got mine from Parelli and they are often on Ebay too.

Usually once a week at least (mainly because I cant be arsed walking back to the house to get my saddle!!

) and ellie usually goes superb bareback. Also often do jumping and hopped over tiny xc (tyres and logs) and galloped around like mad things. Great fun and I must say has given me a good seat and stickability!!

I've started doing it once a week to try and improve my balance.

So far I can only walk and do a tiny bit of trot (about half the school) but I'm hoping to gradually build it up and take him hacking through the forest bareback next summer.

I'm hoping it will be good in the winter when he's too wet and muddly to put a saddle on!

ArticFox - those pictures are fantastic - that's what I'd like to achieve!

I forgot my saddle on several occasions so rode out bareback. Great fun. Once on a two hour hack. Really enjoyed it and my boy didn't seem to mind a bit.

When i was really young, and had just started riding, some of my best riding memories are of my first yard, where i was literally eight years younger than the rest of the girls who helped out- and our field, like daretodream's, was about a mile and a half away, so we always rode back in headcollars - as it was a hunt yard, little riding school and polo yard there were all sorts- some better at being ridden bareback than others...! as there were quiet country large grass verges the whole way, we cantered most of the way! sooo unsafe

At my current yard where i polo groom and keep my horse, my friends and i often exercise polo ponies in summer by riding one bareback and leading up to 4 off them.

great fun... probably not great insurancewise.......:D but it is a great way to develop your seat and balance. Wouldnt ride without headcollar/bridle on my horse though- would have even less control than usual! well done arctic fox!!

i knew i had this somewhere....my sister and i broke 2 dartmore ponies for my cuz about 7 years ago, there really was no breaking to them, just jumped on in the stable a few times and then went out into the field and had them walking, trotting and cantering in no time...the only thing was that my cuz didnt have a saddle at the time so we done everything bareback, eventually she wanted the ponies jumping so we made jumps outa whatever we could find and put them over it (also bareback)

I would ride my older horse anywhere bare back. When he was still jumping I would XC, hack, SJ him bareback, he is too old now!I have had him for 12 years so I totally trust him.
My TB doesn't understand though and gets quite upset about it, so I done bother. He is a sensitive flower at the best of times

Bless him!

I ride bareback once a week sitting on a numnah as it's less slippy. My dr instructor is obsessed by it & thinks it's good for 'feel'. It also forices you to sit properly. My WOW has giant dressage blocks & I'm so locked into position that it's v easy to brace myself against the blocks to balance / use strength to get a result. Bareback you HAVE to use yourself properly.

I was extremely doubtful to start with & the first time was so weird cos hadn't done it since I was about 10. Also, on my last horse I'd have stayed on about 3 seconds as he didn't take prisoners. Didn't feel safe at all. However, although Adrian was v surprised, he's very laid back so he just got on with it.

As a child i used to ride bareback all the time with just a head collar on. I stil ride my cob bareback now and again Mainly in the arena but do hack him round the field bareback - it helps my position and balance and is something different to do and its great fun.
