Yesterday when I got to the yard it had been raining heavily and it was obviously going to rain heavily again pretty soon, so I just slapped a halter on each of my two horses, jumped on and whizzed them round the village for 30 minutes and thankfully missed the next rainstorm.
I never, never see anyone else out riding bareback. I've done it regularly since I had my first pony and in the winter due to lack of daylight hours and filthy muddy horse I ride bareback most weekdays and only use the saddle at weekends. To me, it's just a normal thing to do. When I was a kid we all used to ride out bareback a lot.
What's happened to it? Why does nobody ride bareback any more? Or is it just around here?

My grandaughters both ride our pony bareback. They spent quite a bit of time over the last few weeks in the heat doing this because it was less sweaty for the pony and they enjoy doing it.

I love riding bare back :) dad doesn't let us hack out without a saddle and I respect that decision but on the field we walk, trot , canter and started doing cross poles bareback :) once tess is back in work I plan on doing more of it , helps with balance

I may be wrong and I hate to be a kill joy but check your insurance. You may not be covered in the event of an accident if your horse isn't wearing a saddle and bridle on the roads.

Yeah, this. It's in the highway code that you have to be fully tacked up. I have done it once when I was younger, probably about 15ish, and didn't realise. I'm 26 now and am not as confident as I used to be so don't really even do it that much at the stables... should do though but maybe on our old cob so I know I'm as safe as I can be lol.

We used to ride RS ponies back to their fields bareback, often leading one as well, there was much less traffic on the roads then though.
I don't understand the reference to the dark and bareback though, how does not having a saddle make it easier to see in winter?
I certainly wouldn't be riding round the village without a bridle and don't understand the point of that either.

LOL :D Saving time - if I only have half an hour of daylight then I don't want to waste it with grooming and tacking up! I don't have to ride on the roads (our village is a very quiet dead end though so traffic is rare), but I never see people on the hill or the bridleways bareback either.
