Hi,

I'm going to start to learn how to ride (at a riding school) and I am wanting to get the essentials prepared before I start to make sure I am safe and comfortable lol! I am totally clueless as to what boots are 'good' so I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction? I'm not looking to spend an absolute fortune yet either as I'm just starting out :).

Hi, I got back to riding a year ago after a long break. I got some Harry hall jodphur boots from equestrianclearance.com, cost about £20 and done the job nicely! Also if your just starting out the riding school may lend you some.

Yes, no need to spend a load of money at this stage .. that comes later :)
Good luck with the riding :)
If you turn up early you can often help tacking up your pony.

At the moment I'd recommend riding in a sturdy pair of shoes/boots with a small (about 1cm) wide heel (no walking boots /trainers) until you're sure you want to do it more long term. There's no point forking out yet, as Mrs D says, there's plenty of time for being broke because of horses!

Thats a good point. My first couple of lessons back I wore some Cat boots until I was sure I'd take it up again. And yes expect to be broke and sore! Hope it goes well :)

This might sound really stupid but would wellies be suitable for the first few lessons? Just that I already have a pair of decent wellies (albeit they are pink with horses on *blush* lol).

I was always told you shouldn't ride in wellies because the rubber can stick in the stirrup......therefore if you fall off you could be dragged if the foot is stuck.

Now this might have been a scare story but I still wouldn't wear wellies to ride.
Maybe someone more experienced can advise???

P.s. no such thing as a stupid question :)

It might be worth buying some second hand on Ebay or looking at tack sales - a better quality pair, even pre-used, will give you better feel and more comfort than wellies would. What size are you?

Just another possible 'silly question' is there any difference comfort wise wearing the ankle boots as opposed to the boots that are mid-calf? I only ask as I don't normally wear ankle boots (during the day not when riding - havent tried out either yet as just looking at getting back into riding since being a teen) due to them not feeling so comfy but I wear mid-calf boots a lot.
Sorry if this sounds ridiculous!
