What happened to all of the riding centres for lessons?

I remember when I was a kid I could go to tons of places for lessons. I guess it’s just cost prohibitive to run.

Due to a series of unfortunate events Im probably coming back to around Newcastle next week after 15 years away and figured I’d try to see if I could have a private lesson or two to see how English and North American riding is different (curiousity more than anything). Now the only place even remotely close is Pockerley and they don’t have an indoor arena which isn’t great for Jan weather (although I could be misrepresenting since it would be typical to ride in an indoor here this time of year).

Everywhere I knew as a kid is either private boarding or has shut down completely. It’s such a shame.

Quite common to be riding outside in Jan in the UK - indoors are still a bit of a luxury for many yards.

Reasons for closing - lack of business sense, too much hassle, insurance costs, Covid ruining things, too expensive etc etc

It’s just so sad. I just remember growing up and having so much riding available. In the end I just see this sport dying a very long death.

I’ll take a look at those places. Hoping to stay in 25 mins of shotley bridge as I may need to take taxi if I don’t get a car.
Thank you everyone. If there are more suggestions then keep them coming. Otherwise I appreciate the help.

I don't know that area very well, How far are Penshaw or Washington Rda?

If you get a bus to Newcastle, Stepney is walking distance from the centre

If your on Facebook, join riders of the northeast and I bet they can suggest more?

Oh I completely forgot about penshaw. They’re not far away at all, only about 20 mins drive I think. Thanks appreciate it.

Finchale View have a large indoor and a couple of outdoors. Just outside Durham. They are an Approved Riding School.
Also Murton Equestrian near Whitley Bay has an indoor. Also approved.
