Riding Club - Committee expenses

Definitely worth pushing over - like I said, I imagine many RC members would not mind paying for one small meal for the committee members given what they do for them. A £40 a head meal is a very different story and is disgraceful. That £1000 could have paid for some new jumps or heavily subsidised a clinic with a top rider.

With RC,PC, Parent teachers, village hall there is all ways trouble in getting someone to help. Our RC has very low entry fees at shows but still has a fair income. I can not understand why if you have a descent income why they do not pay people to steward fence judge etc., the local scouts/sea scouts will usually do it for food and a donation. I would imagine if their 'payment ' to themselves was common knowledge they will have even fewer helpers
I think most people who do things for RC/PC would never expect payment in any form. Our PC club had far too much money in reserves, any excess should be spent on members interests, subsidising lessons or paying for more qualified instructors. Some clubs seem obsessed with putting money in the bank even when they have few out goings.

Just out of interest, are there no regs about how much should be in an RC/PC bank account at any one time? I used to run a Guide unit and we were always told very strictly that unless you were fundraising for a specific purpose, there should never be more than a certain amount in the bank (can't remember the exact details as it was a while ago now but it was either a fixed sum or two terms running costs).

A meal of this nature is not committee expenses & should not be listed in the accounts as such.
Committee expenses are costs incurred in their work for the club - fuel, stationary, postage etc.
This is a gift or perk and totally out of order given the percentage of club funds taken up.

Hi Everyone,
We were given a copy of the Riding Club accounts at the last AGM. On there it had Committee Christmas Meal. The meal was £40 per head and the Committee and their partners (nearly all of whom are not involved in the Riding Club in any shape or form) were paid for out of the Clubs funds. The meal totalled just under £1000 for all of them - consequently the Riding Club in question only made a profit of £20 for last year. I am quite frankly disgusted as this £1000 would equal to 40 of the clubs memberships! Am I wrong in thinking this is extreme? No I am not naming and shaming.
Sounds a bit dodgy to me!😕

I'm sure there is a limit as to how much you can have in the account, I can't remember how much or why but ours had about £3500 in it at one point and we had to spend it!

£40 a head is ridiculous to start with and not to mention the partners fee being paid for too!

My RC committee have a Christmas meal paid for by the club - this includes meal & two drinks each, any more to be paid for by themselves. No partners attend and any that did would be expected to pay for themselves. I don't have a problem with that - I was on the committee for a time and the club finances are healthy. If the club was in trouble financially I would expect that meal to be one of the things abandoned.

There is another non-BRC affiliated riding club near us that does exactly the same every year. But because so few of the members actually turn up to the AGM or read the accounts it has never been challenged yet. Last year was quite a sum as it also included bar bill. This club has nearly 20 people on committee and pays 'expenses' to them for every show varying from £50 each for running a jumping ring/show secretary to £30 for stewarding plus free food and drinks all day. They also get paid for setting up the show field and their buffet and rosettes are free at presentation evening too. However, I find it ironic that the chair regularly promotes how the committee do this 'to give something back'.

It's surprising how many of these charitable organisations seem to be run for the benefit of those in power.

Yes definitely read accounts correctly. When challenged they claimed that 'they deserved it after what they had done in the year for us'. Dont get me wrong, I agree that being on a committee is a thankless task and it would be ok had it been a meal down at the local pub for Committtee members only, not a restaurant meal for them and their partners!

I have been on three university committees. On the first two, one of which I was president of, there was no reward at the end. In the last one, for which I was catering officer and coordinated food for weekends away and special events, the procedure is that the incoming committee member gives £20 which buys the outgoing member a tankard. They get engraved with name, position you had and the year. They are all well used!

I say the reward is seeing people enjoying themselves. And let's not forget- it's voluntary. If they were that fed up, they could step down.

Ah probably nothing more you can do apart from leave then- unless there is anything written into the constitution maybe, we did used to pay for everyone to have fish and chips at a fiver a day if they came to the AGM ;)
