Hypothetical question - If a novice person bought an ex eventer that say had earnt over 100 BE points in a previous life quite a few years ago and this person just wanted to do normal riding club competitions would they be able to do the prelim or intro level horse trials or would it have to be all of the open big stuff ?

I am not sure what the current rules are. If I were you I would go on the BHS website and follow the linkl to riding clubs ands see if teh info is there. If it isn't email them to check.

BRC opperate a downgrading rule that for BE points allows 3 points for each full year that the horse remains unregistered to be removed, so I'm afraid that a horse with over 100 points is unlikely to ever be eligible for BRC horses trials.

The rules for horse eligibility are here

http://www.bhs.org.uk/Riding/British_Riding_Clubs/2009_Rulebook/Appendices_1_to_23.aspx

& you need to look at appendix 2.

Have a look at that, & if there's anything you still don't understand let me know & I'll try & explain more fully.

Thanks for posting that link, we were talking about this last night. I have a horse who has been off best part of 4 years now, before that he was placed 5th and 6th PN, going by that it looks like that lasts forever despite the fact he has no points so can't do the novice (can safely say the prospect of getting him round a sj course again does not fill me with confidence as he was enough of a spook then never mind after all this time at anything above novice)

Bit disappointing as it wouldn't exactly be pothunting - and something that had been round dozens of PN and been placed 7th and below would be eligible. (he only did 3 in total)

unless I have read it wrong...?

No the PN 'notional' points do not last forever. They get taken off the same as 'proper' points do, so if it is four full years since he was last registered youcan take 12 notional points off his notional total !!
(Should at this point explain that the rule regarding notional points for PN places only applies to BRC Novice horse trials, & not to intermediate or open. The rule was brought in when the new BRC Intermediate horse trials came in to being, as it was felt that now we offered a PN equivalent horses who could do that shouldn't be in the BRC novice comps)

He was last registered in 2006 (was placed 2004) but actually only did 1 event and has been unregistered since so would that mean he would be eligible for novice again next year? (2010?!) Thanks for the help zebedee, would be great to have something to aim for!!

You will be fine to do BRC Nov in the 2010 comp year !! You have a total of three notional points,(one 5th & one 6th place ?) & if the horse was last registered in 2006 you already have two full years to claim the downgrade of three points per year - so you could have done BRC novice from 2008 onwards.
Check with your club when the winter qualifiers for the Festival Challenge competitons are, as you will also be eligible for those !!

Thank you for your help (still got another 6 months til I can get on him but can do all the walk work in hand which will mean he is reasonably fit - now just have to keep fingers and toes crossed everything keeps going well (he was poisoned which resulted in toxic laminitis and we now have the associated mess that comes with that!)

Oh blimey - you were lucky not to lose him then.
Best of luck with getting him back in to work, & keep us up to date with the progress.
