Riding Club Teams, Organisers - Help please!

I wonder if anyone that organises or is involved with their Riding Club teams help me please?

Could you let me know what is paid for by your club?

Teams (Area) qualifier for FOTH, Horse Trials, Show Jumping or Dressage.

Do you have any training paid or preliminary entries or local team entry paid by the Riding Club?

Also:

Championships, what is paid for? Team entry, stabling, diesel/travel?

Any comments from people that have a view on their riding club supporting/not supporting team events?

We are just revamping our teams policy and it is causing a little upset so I wondered what the 'norm' is?

Im the team co-ordinator for my club so might be of help (or might not!). We pay preliminary entries (the ones that go to Stoneleigh) and team members pay the 'on the day' entries so to speak.
We organise some team training and are currently discussing whether this will be subsidised or not, but as we can get free use of a venue and are just paying an instructor the cost is minimal anyway.
For championships we have a set amount aside for teams, which is split between however many teams make it there, and we do fundraising events to top this up. Anything extra is paid by team members.

I used to be.

We decided that we could make some contribution, if the team was qualifying the prelim entry fee was paid by the club, team members paid the area entry fee.

If non qualifying which happens quite a bit split 50:50 entry fees.

its complicated. because it isnt cheap particularly for smaller clubs but if you are asking people to compete for you.......
 
We pay 50% of the entry fees (add the prelim and on the day together and pay all then ask for 50% back) and if we get to champs we pay stabling and half of entries :)

It seems we are about the same as most others then, we pay prelim entries for qualifiers and riders pay entry fee's, we then pay the entry fee (within reason) and £25 stabling for each rider for the championships.

We are a large club with a lot of money in the bank :) some committee members feel that more should be spent on teams; more training, so more investment. but other committee members don't like the idea of this money being spent on teams ..... it's a tricky one :confused:
 
i organise the horse trials team for the club i am in. (but it is the same for dressage and SJ teams too)

for area qualifiers, the club pays the preliminary entry fee and the member pays the area entry fee and their own transport costs etc.
for a championship, the club pays all entry fees and the member will pay cost of travel/stabling etc.

i think you have to balance it depending on the size of the club and also how many members are actually interested in representing the club at BRC comps.

See this is the thing ... we have loads of money sitting in the bank, and as Ester said above we are asking people to compete for their club, should we not use this money to pay for training, entry fee's etc.?

Some committee members feel the money would be better in the bank in case one or more of our big events needs to be cancelled, others say lets use some of it to get together a great team or two, get them trained by instructors at venues that we pay for (within the club) and enjoy the process and hopefully the success this brings!:rolleyes:
 
I think the trouble is that the proportion of members who benefit from the club paying for training/entries etc is small which is always going to cause an issue.

But equally when I asked most members they said they were happy to see other members of the club doing well and competing and liked reading the reports.

But I do think that you need to demonstrate that you are giving money/training/socials back to all members not just those involved in teams if that makes sense.
 
I have to agree with Ester,
For one of the riding clubs I'm a member of, they pay all the entry fees for all teams competitions including qualifiers, however, the same people seem to compete every time, and it seems sometimes like the committee use teams as a way of getting their own entries to competitions for free. If they were to add free instruction for team members, I might be a bit upset - if I got free instruction, I might be good enough to compete for the teams.
The other club I'm a member of (much less competitive) contribute £5 for each team member for each qualifier - I have no idea what they would contribute for a championship as I don't think we've been good enough to qualify for any!

It does seem that our club already pays more than some other clubs, I do see the point you are making about spreading the money around for those not involved on the teams, we are doing some 'club days' this year which are non competitive 'free' get together's to make use of the venues, rc jumps and instructors (and a free bbq!!) maybe we can get some team people to make the most of these days as well.
