Riding during the heat wave…

I was riding at 9pm the other night, it was bliss! I love coming home from work and spending a couple of hours in the sun in the garden, then heading to the yard around 7:30/8pm.

I’m always very impressed by people waking up early to ride before work. If I did that I’d be struggling to stay awake by late afternoon and I’d find my job even harder (already pretty mentally taxing😂)

I'd be too tempted to stop at the pub if I hacked out at 9pm!! 😄

Can I please ask a question about clipping in summer

Do you find that the shorter coat intensifies fly nuisance for the ponies?
I leave the saddle and girth area (plus legs & half face) on as I do think mine gets bitten more easily. He doesn't seem bothered by them though.

But, otherwise it's so much easier!

Same temp and humidity here too.

I usually work it out using what the temperature "feels like" if it's higher than the actual temperature just to be on the safe side. There is a nice breeze out there today so I think if you rode where you still had that wind or in shady areas, it wouldn't be too bad.

Looking at stats for tomorrow, it seems humidity is higher in the morning hours, which is interesting!

Ugh that was a hot one last night 🔥 My daughter had a lesson in the evening, pony was so good and managed really well but we did chuck a lot of water on her before and after…I wouldn’t be in a hurry to do that again to be honest! It was still about 27c when we put her back in her field at 7pm!

No riding now till this breaks on Sunday, cannot wait to be honest!

I've just had an official leaflet put through the door on how to protect yourself in extreme heat. Nothing particularly new, just stay inside and drink water kind of thing. I'm a bit fed up of sitting in the dark all day as it is and it isn't officially summer until tomorrow.

Woke up at 4.30am. Out hacking horse by 5.30am. Lovely ride in the woods but the flies were getting up when I was on my way home at 7am. Dog has been walked and I am now hiding inside for the day!

At home I ride first thing, I prefer it and it works with my routine.

At shows, I ride in whatever I’ve got to deal with. We are both fit, used to different temps, neither struggle with the heat etc.

With two oldies we just have a few days off! I'm not great in this kind of heat and they're quite happy staying in the shade of their shelter.

We went got a 30 minute walk hack this morning (baby pony’s first completely solo hack!) and although it wasn’t particularly sunny, it was very sweaty.

She was such a good girl even though very tense and a little spooky and got a good bath and mane scrub which she very much appreciated.

Tomorrow it’s forecast 32 here so she’ll get brought in for a fuss but no riding.
