Riding Hat Fittings?

I've seen the new hat I want in navy online (derby house), but at our local tack shops they don't sell that particular hat-Champion Skull cap- in Navy. So would it be rude for me to go there and ask them to measure my head but then buy the hat elsewhere?!

could they not order the hat in for you? if you don't know what size you are it's best to get it properly fitted.

I would get the hat fitted properly, when I went to get my new hat I really wanted a vented hat, however when they tried to fit me one, it turned out of all the hats they had (lots) there was only one style that actually fitted me head! I was gutted it was a style I didn't want but none of the others fitted properly and I figured it was more important to have one that fitted properly than one that looked good but didn't fit!

Ditto riverboy. You need to try the hat on, not just measure your head. See if they can order it for you

And you can't guarantee that the same maker will size up the same. I had a Champion Ventair 56cm that turned out to be a little big. When I landed on it and came to replace it I went for a skull. The only one that fitted (tried about 10 on) was a Champion skull that was a 57cm but actually felt considerably SMALLER than the Champion Ventair in 56cm!
