I've suffered with a charles owen skull cap for the last 5 years and finally have come to the decision to fork out for a new hat! I found the Charles owen one horrible, gave me headaches etc and made my head really sweaty. soooo any reccomendations? I'm looking at the harry hall legend ones, has anyone got one and what do you think about it? Or can anyone else reccomend another make?

I can only wear Champion hats, as they're the only ones that fit my head shape, I have a ventair one at the mo and haven't had any problems with it.

Get to try as many different makes and models as poss , just because a Champion Ventair , for example ,fits doesnt mean that the Champion euro hat fits the same . Charles O and Harry Hall hats are basically the same shape ( round and shallow ish) , Champions tend to be more of an oval shape and are deeper .So try on at shows and tack shops until you find the right shape for you, well worth taking your time so you get the right one. Also dont be fobbed off in a shop , try the hat on for quite sometime , as you will be wearing it for an hour or so not the 30 secs in the shop ! Try on friends hats but take into account that their hat may not be the right size and of course it will of changed to their shape but it may give you an idea as to if its a possibility. I always thought I was a 6 7/8, couldnt find a hat that fitted and was comfy, so I got a Patey and Im a 6 3/4 ... a size down !! Stick to your guns if its not comfy dont buy it . I worked in a tack shop for 14years and fitting hats is time consuming and if we didnt have a suitable hat we didnt make something fit just to get a sale. Find a shop you trust and see what they come up with. Good Luck

Also check safety standard. A 1384 even with a Kite mark is the
Basic standard so do try and
Get either An ASTM or Snell standard
Taking my medic hat off now
I found the ventair too hot as no vents at the back. My pro tector is a little better but. Will be looking for something even cooler for everyday

I had a Harry Hall decided to treat myself to a more expensive Charles Owen as my son had one and it seemed very nice(I am not knocking them by the way)

I ended up coming out with a cheaper Harry Hall again I found the Charles O too shallow for my large size 7 head!!

So as advised you do have to try them out. My other son had a Junior Champion thats what he liked.

I didnt dent my budget but wanted something good and perhaps brand isnt always right?

ahah im size 7 1/8! I've ordered a harry hall as tried my friends out and it seemed to be right shape. to be honest anything is going to be better than my charles owen I hate it!

I splashed out a new hat when I went back to the saddle a couple of months ago. I have very few riding shops locally and ended up in Go Outdoors with a Champion CPX3000 (you can buy this cheaper elsewhere and I claimed against their price promise which they honoured). It looks nice, but is a fixed peak and non-vented, I used it today and on a hot day it certainly wasn't the coolest thing on the planet!!
