I have a Polly adjustable riding hat which I've had for about a year now. When I was on polo pony a few weeks ago the hat was securely fastened and tightened to be as tight as possible for my head size. He bucked me off (my first fall :L) I fell backwards (the adjusting wheel is on the back )and the first thing I did was feel my head, only to find the hat had gone onto the loosest setting !
Should I be buying a new hat?
If yes, any suggestions? (nothing too expensive though)

Thanks for reading xx

Its not worth taking any risks with your head and yes, get a new hat. I can recommend the Champion Ventair, paid £80 for mine which I think is reasonable and after all, you cant really put a price on your life/head, you have only got the 1.

It could be the padding had squished after a year's wear.

We had to buy a new hat for daughter recently and she has a large adult shaped head - poor assistant in Robinsons made a beeline for the kids hats and I said no, they'll be too shallow she has an adult head. Several hats later we came out with a Gatehouse HS1 which I have to say feels very solid yet no heavier than her old Champion, and is lovely and padded inside.

Any riding hat should be replaced after it has suffered an impact, and also routinely every 2 or 3 years as the protection offered can diminish.

I'm concerned that you dont want to pay to much for a hat, its your head you only get one you can alway make more money, but you wont get another head!

I'm wearing the Charles and Owen APM Jockey Skull, £115 but worth every penny, feels fab, very comfy and feels safe!

OP didn't say she didn't want to pay 'too much' just said not too expensive, that is a reasonable request.

I am another one that loves the champion ventair, Also have a Charles owen velvet one which is also lovely. Really depends on the shape of your head as to which are more comfortable for you. ie different makes are different shapes!

I do apologise for wording it wrong!!!
But many people do go for cheap hats from the likes of Tesco etc and then don't understand why they damage easily or don't protect as well.

I agree with what you are saying, but if the Tesco one, for example has the same BS safety standards (or whatever they are called), shouldn't they offer the same protection as one of £150?

The problem I always have with hats is that they fit fine in the shop, then after a couple of weeks they start to tip forward. I seem to spend half my time riding pushing my hat out of my eyes. And I have always had hats fitted by a 'hat fitter'.

(ok I'm going to be spat at now)
I love my Decathlon hat for 8.99!

HAHA :D thats more like my price! Although others say you can't put a price on safety; but I think that providing that the hat keeps your head safe and has a reliable kite mark etc, I personally don't think it matters if its cheap, sometimes your just paying for the name :)

I do agree that alot of the time you are just paying for the name as with everything else, as to the kit mark i understand what you are saying, but the way i see it is the jockey club only let the jockeys use a couple of different hats to race in so they cant consider all hats to be safe even if they have the BS saftey standards etc. My fiance is an ex pro jockey so iv seen some bad falls and if theres a chance that the £120 is even only 1% more safe than a £20 tesco one, i'm still going to pay more.

I think if its coming lose after a couple of weeks thats down to cheap padding wearing to quickly but thats just my opinion, because i know all hats will loosen off eventually.
