It's about time I bought new hat as mine is about 10 years old (I know naughty for not getting it updated sooner) as I recently had a nasty fall where I broke my ankle :( so I thought it's about time to review my safety needs!
Has anyone got any hat recommendations? I would need it to be competition legal not that I currently compete but I plan to do so shortly.
What's the difference between PAS105 and BSEN 1384 regulations?
I don't want to spend a ridiculous amount, I am expecting about £100.
Would be grateful if any has an good or bad reviews on certain products.

If you need it to be competition legal then you are probably best off not getting a hat that only meets the BSEN 1384 hat standard as this is being withdrawn from competitions. I believe as it stands at the moment, if you have a hat with just that hat standard from 1 January 2017 you will be not be able to use it for any competitions. Even at the moment British Eventing, British Riding Clubs etc aren't accepting it alone, though British Dressage is.

The different between PAS015 and BSEN 1384 is simply that they have to go through slightly different testing procedures.

Just off on a tangent a bit (sorry OP!) But i fit in to Junior hats, which are cheaper, is there any reason i shouldn't purchase one?

As long as the hat is to a suitable standard, there is no reason why you can't wear a junior hat. I do wear them as well, as all but the very largest/smallest of heads would fit into a junior riding hat. I believe that someone did research from hats that Eton boys(?) have to wear. Apparently childrens heads stop growing at about 14. Juniors hats are exempt from VAT so that is why they are cheaper :)

Thanks for your responses guys. I currently have a Champion jockey skull which is actually a junior size and I have had this since I was 15 and never had a problem with the fit or comfort. (Although I haven't really tried any other hats so until I compare I guess I don't know what I'm missing!) But I was interested in getting a full helmet with built in cap etc. What do you guys think are better skulls or helmets?
I like the idea of air vents as I do get ridiculously sweaty hat hair in the summer.
With regards to the safety regs are we saying it is better to have a helmet that meets PAS015 then?
Thanks again for your help!

Charles Owen 4star - great level of protection and very comfortable. I particularly like the protection to the base of the skull, which my previous Gatehouse did not offer me (I always seem to land flat on my back and bash my head)!!

Second the Charles Owen 4star. But it really depends on the shape of your head. I used to ride in a Champion Jr not too long ago and it's been a long time since I've been a teenager. I really liked the look of the Gatehouse hats but none fitted my head shape (at least the ones my local tack store stocks!)

I use a Charles Owen pro II, I'm absolutely in love with it! Fits nice and comfortable, and meets up to the standards (as far as I am concerned- please correct me if I am wrong!)

If you're like me and have a large strangely shaped head you will wear whatever you can get that fits the best out of all in the store. I'd definitely go to a shop and get one fitted considering you haven't bought one for so long! It's okay ordering online but if you are like me, unless you re buy what you already have it's unlikely to fit. I currently have a HS1 which is the best fitting hat I've had yet... But besides that it's comfy and not too expensive for what it was when I got it before the standards fully changed ;)
