Evening,

I really just wanted your opinions on the various riding hats out there. I've suddenly realised that I've had my good old Champion Junior Plus jockey skull hat for about 10 years now and maybe the time has come to invest in a new one as although I only ride once a fortnight at the moment we have started to do a bit more jumping and cross country and well, 10 years is a long time too!

I had a quick look on the trade stands at Gatcombe today but I have no clue what the differences are between them all (except price). Has anyone got any recommendations for a decent, not too expensive skull cap. And what standards and things should I be looking for? Also, the new style hats (with the stripe down the middle) - is the fixed peak on those suitable for x-country as I was lead to believe that you shouldn't have a fixed peak but I also assume those new style hats are suitable?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there!

I have a Dublin Onyx which is up to all standards and aorund £30/5, so just below average for a skull cap. The peak is detachable so you can put a silk over it for x-country but the look smart anyway. I have the purple (my xc colour) but they also come in black. They're really comfy and vented, with a neck support at the back. I have a webbing harness but they do come with a leather one, though I've never seen one. Three of me friends have got one after trying mine on and I love mine, would highly recommend.

They look better than that pic, I'll try to get one of my wearing mine so you can get an idea of the shape/colour.
Hope that helps.

ETA I just realised I'm wearing it in my sig but the pic isn't very clear so I'll try to get a close up.

If you are looking for a good everyday hat, I can't reccomend Troxel enough. I had one until I fell off a couple of months ago, destroying it and am now back to my old skull cap. I HATE it with a passion (didn't mind it before) - the troxel was so much lighter and cooler and comfier. I miss my troxel *sniffle* Once you've worn one a couple of times, you won't want to swap back.

I had the troxel legacy golg (one of the more expensive ones - don't like the cheaper spirit ones as much, thought they do come in better colours!

This is the one I'll be replacing it with soon:

I also have JTE (one of the orginal 'striped' hats, before the others all jumped on the band wagon) and it's nicer than a skull cap but still not as nice as my beloved, now deceased Troxel.

Thanks guys, I think I'll go for a look and try a few on (I have a stupidly large head!). I quite like the look of the Troxel. If I bought something like the Elite Plus one on this page: http://www.robinsons-uk.com/products/Pro...age=2#sku.20018 Would I be ok to x-country in it?

I really like the look of the ones with the stripe down the middle (I always do this - follow fashion but just much later than everyone else!) but I also am a bit concerned that as I only ride at a riding school I'd rock up and look a bit of an arogant a*se (and promptly fall on my head over a cross pole of course).
