Im getting myself a new hat, I'm loving the look of KEP, KASK, Samshield and Gatehouse currently (fixed peak gatehouse & skull cap gatehouse). Im just wondering what i can compete in in a fixed peak hat? What does everyones do in their fixed peak hats? Is it worth spending 400+ on a hat? Doesn't KEP do a type of hat with a fixed peak that will shatter? And personal favorite hat brands please! Bonus points if i haven't heard of them before
Thanks

I'm looking at Charles Owen helmet, at the moment, because I want one without a peak; there are covers with a peak to fit over the helmet. I imagine that these are available to add to other brands.

I know others feel differently but I never spend more than about £100 on a hat, if you have to replace it after a fall then forking out £400+ would just be too much for me! only you know if you can afford that kind of outlay.

I am a bit of a boring old fangled person, I tried one of the newer designs on at Olympia but just didn't like how it felt, I like a nice velvet hat if going fixed peak... was never allowed a velvet as a child so think it's a hangover from that :oops: champion hats fit me best, I have a gatehouse too with a washable liner but it makes my head hurt after a bit, and tbh it's not as low profile as my others so looks a bit weird to me ;)

You can't complete XC under BE, RC or PC rules with a fixed peak (Although you can FEI with some restrictions). SJ, Dressage, endurance etc are fine.

Spend what youw ant on your hat. My preference is to but the highest safety standard available because you only have one head - but that is just me.

You can't compete xc in a fixed peak. AFAIK the same applies to hunter trials organised by riding clubs. A fixed peak is fine in any other discipline.
The best attributes in a hat, for me personally is one that's ventilated, is dial adjustable and has a removable, washable lining. Anything that meets the safety standards is fine, whether it costs £400 or £60. Like milliepops, I don't get expensive ones, in case I have to replace it.

Just as an additional thought on peaked hats, while the subject is being discussed - I know many people prefer not to wear then due to the risk of making a head injury worse if you hit the ground with the peak. However I had a fall a few years ago in which I think the peak saved me from breaking my nose - it bent upwards and took the impact of the fall. I was still concussed but I think that would have happened anyway - little sod of a pony REALLY wanted me off. Has that happened to anyone else?

P.S. I still like peaked hats, but would agree with what other have said above - so long as it is comfy, well ventilated and meets relevant safety standards, I just buy the cheapest well fitting hat I can, which is usually £80-£100. Then if I fall on it or drop it it's not a major problem to replace.

Same here.
except I fit Charles Owen skull caps. I have a couple of velvet hatsilks in navy and black so the hat looks sort-of 'traditional' but the underneath is to a good safety standard and I'd rather drop 80 quid than 400 quid on a replacement when needed (remember you don't have to have a fall off a horse to compromise a hat - an empty hat smashing down from a shelf onto concrete for example will damage it).

HS1 (gatehouse) all the way as I understand it has the highest safety rating. My head is valuable to me and it's protection is paramount. I am not going to waste money on vanity hats.

I bought a Samshield and came off in it. I got concussed so bought a Charles Owen instead as it feels much safer. However Samshield did take the hat and checked it all to make sure it was still usable, free of charge.

Had a few champion hats one with and one without peak. They are great, however the foam inside shrinks once you have worn it for a while so get a quite tight fitted one. You can get many colours and look great. The ones without a peak are very grippy for your hat cover and the hat cover has never fallen off yet. They are super comfy and definitely recommend! You can even get sparkly ones and pink ones. Love my champion skull but is there anywhere you can get silks or covers with a decent size peak? Sick of squinting when it’s sunny. Lucky me south of England! Comfiest hay I’ve ever had though.

My velvet jobbies are from Racesafe. Make sure that you buy them large enough so that the silk covers the whole hat, then the peak is far enough over your face to act as a sunshade. My silks are XL size.

you want a sun visor instead of a peak ;)
