Riding Helmets are Bad

Apparently!

Found this on youtube.
While I agree that a hat won't save you from breaking your neck or something else, but your head is your brain box, if that gets broken, it's awfully serious :(

Seems a little...extreme! Thoughts?

I don't think that guy should wear a riding hat either. I don't think he has much to lose if he should sustain a head injury.

He's American, that explains a lot!! :p

I would have preferred watching him test out his theroy. He should have have done a tuck and roll whilst galloping on rocks without a hat and then we could see if he had less injuries than if he was wearing one. MMMMM might write him a letter asking for that video. What a tool.

Annoying, stupid man. He has two points to make:

1. Helmet manufacturers are pro-helmet. No *****, Sherlock!

2. Helmets don't stop ALL accidents and riders might take more risks if they wear a helmet. Yep. There will always be idiots.

He takes about 30 minutes of shouting at us (and laughing at his own jokes) to make these two dubious points. What an @rse.

Standing there holding a beer can makes you superman... says alot really when you have had a few. He thinks he knows it all and nothing can touch him. Even the cat peed him off....lol

I am completely pro helmet, but I found the guy interesting and certainly not a dick head. He does have a valid point. Now I have been kicked and bashed about enough over the years and walked away from some pretty nasty equine pile ups,so I dont need anyone to tell me that the helmet does not "make it safe".But there are a lot of novices out there who think that it does ! There are a lot of riders who ride in a sort of cocooned (Thinks? sp?)existance , right up to the point that they push their luck way too far.Maybe this guy has a point, a few hard Knocks early on might teach some folk that they do need to learn some basic equine survival techniques. A couple of years ago I watched a ride go out from a local stables. A woman had a new ex racehorse, and she had allowed her friend to ride it. I remember thinking ,that I must have misjudged the riders ability as I would have been cautious(after a lifetime around racehorses)let alone put her on it. Sadly overconfidence did not help when she had the accident from hell . Didnt know how to calm down a racehorse .Piled into a car and nearly killed herself, horse was eventualy PTS.A very sad story. But if this woman had had a bit more of that overconfidence knocked out of her earlier in her equestrian experience, would she have Put herself into such a situation. So dont slate this guy too hard ,he does have a point even if I dont totaly agree with it.

very well said Mike007

I am not sure I agree. :D
I watched the first video, and saw some equine interactions/behaviours that would have made me step away from the horse's back end - he seemed oblivious.
I worked with horses (some difficult ones) for more than 20 years, and got bitten only once (freak accident when a 2yo got stuck over a metal gate) and kicked only once (by my own foal who has never raised a hoof again, needless to say ;) ) so perhaps I am just more risk averse than some...

Personaly I would have been a bit more cautious about what I did in front of a camera in case some folk misunderstood. That guy totaly knew his horses and I would submit, was in no way oblivious. Shils ,it sounds like you have never been bitten actualy. When a horse bites for real you can expect teeth marks on your spine and your sternum,I kid you not ! I have seen it twice ,both men were picked up like rag dolls and thrown . Getting nipped just goes with the terratory of being around horses. But I must admit I have never been kicked properly either.

It's a bit patronising to suggest I 'misunderstand' equine behaviour, but I'll forgive you on this occasion. Perhaps you are BOTH oblivious to herd interactions. :p

And when I say I was bitten once, Mike007, that's exactly what it means. The horse didn't mean it, it was a freak accident as I said, not aimed at me but the gate which was eating his leg and causing him a lot of fear and pain.
