I use to have riding lessons for a year and a half on and off to cut the story short, i am going to start again,i am a confident rider, and i am confident in walk, trot, canter, etc..but i want to start again from the basics to get the basis right but how long should it take me to be able to be confident, with always putting my hands where they should be, keeping my leg underneath me, keeping heels down, toes in, keeping my head, shoulders, upbody still in walk, trot and canter and learningbout the diagonals again in trot and canter without thinking..? Then starting leg yield and extended trot, i know you can't put an exact timing as people are different but roughly and realistically. Sometimes i think my leg isn't underneath me, any tips just practise, lessons, lunge, 2 point, stirrup less, and bareback? ;) And in trot you rise according to when the outside leg goes forward, but in canter how do you feel when your on the right leg without looking as i can't without staring and even then!..? Also in trot, should i be rising straight up, or up and out and forward..i know the less your legs move etc..the better? And tips for your riding position in general? How often should i practise my flatwork without it becoming boring so i can vastly improve.

How long is a piece of string :D Regarding the canter it feels horrible when a horse takes off on the wrong leg, all bouncy and bobbly :)

Haha true :) ok thanks for the tip..? I mean im hoping to start riding bareback, stirrupless, on the lunge and in my 2 point position alot more, but how long would it be advisable to start with time wise for each..? And like roughly like 1 year, 6 months, 2 months..? realistically to begin knitting all these things together aswell as figures of eight, 20mm circle, serpentines, i can do this stuff now but not neat..?

I suppose to do everything if you are confident and know it, just needs polishing a few months ? But i find you never stop learning... always great to have lunge lessons and do bareback riding etc. :) Build it up slowly and dont over do yourself, not on any time limit are you ? :)

In honesty. To do it all well and correctly Years!! Especially if you don't ride everyday and unless your ridind a true school master possibly forever, as other people riding incorrectly will undo the work of a good rider
But that's all part of the fun
The better we do something, the more we see how to make even
More improvements :)

i mean i can walk trot and canter, done some jumping, i can do figures of eight, serpentines, 20m circle but i usually get side- tracked as dressage/schooling isn't my forte but i do want to know the basics as a foundation. It's just about doing everything right and put everything where it should be. I had slightly forgotten about the diagonals, i know in trot u shud be rising to when the outside leg goes forward, and in canter the inside leg should be touching down before the outside, but i don't usually feel it and sometimes looking doesn't help, is the only way to change the leg to go back to trot wait a corner do a few strides of sitting trot beforehannd and then try again.

I mean i am a fairly confident rider, and i am very confident in my horse :) not so much confident in my ability but feel not too bad in walk, trot, canter it's just about reminding myself to keep my head up, heels down, shoulders back, elbows bent, leg still, etc..but i need tips to remember all this ^ i have lessons hadn't had one for abit actually. It's just reminding myself about the diagonals in both trot and canter
