I am thinking of going on a riding holiday next spring - has anyone had good/bad experiences that they would like to share. I am a proficient rider and I am looking for somthing moderately challenging and fun. I would be going on my own - what would anyone recommend?
Thanks

I've been to Flowerhill Equestrian near Galway 3 times in the past and it is truely FANTASTIC. If you love XC and jumping it's the holiday for you. The first time I went I was pooping my pants about the XC but by the 3rd day I was jumping everything without a second thought. It was really good for my confidence.

Loads of people go on their own especially in the hunting season and everyone is just so friendly. I'm going again in April next year and I can hardly wait!!!!!!

I went on a riding holiday with a company called Highland HorseBack. It was fantastic. 8 days of riding from one side of scotland to the other (about 15miles a day).
The horses were gorgeous, very fit and well behaved. Its run by a family - very lovely. They only take expereinced riders (must be capable of hanging on for a gallop!)

There was some jumping natural logs & ditches one day but it was totally optional.

I went on my own - a whole day in the saddle and then sharing a dinner table with everyone meant we very quickly made friends whilst comparing our surprising lack of saddle sores!
Google them!

I was thinking abroad and a mixture of riding, trail riding possibly some cross country or polo, I am just seeing what others have done and what they could recommend as, although I am experienced rider, I have never been on a horse holiday before. Also I am in my 40's so looking for something which would suit someone who left pony club a very long time ago.....

I went to an amazing place near Galway called Slieve Aughty Riding Centre. I chose it because it was cheap at first, but i dont think it could have been any better to be honest. Everyone was really friendly, the horses were all nicely schooled and gorgeous (something for every ability) and its set in the Slieve aughty forest. You can do jumping training holidays, they have more XC than you can imagine from small (which i did) to amazing big jumps, ditches, water jumps, banks etc.
We went out in the forests on trails every day and it was very fun, down ditches, through streams, jumps for the confident riders, lovely canters etc.
By next spring the new guest house should be finished too and i know its going to be stunning, they're working hard on it. Going on your own isn't a problem too, they make sure everyone is kept busy and not left out, from breakfast til bedtime.
