Riding horse showing

So I have entered my horse into a show soon, just a local one and its really just as practice to get him out and about and have fun.

But the only ridden class I could do is a riding horse one. Not sure fully on how to present him for that.

I read online that I would need a coloured browband he currently has a diamante one (not many diamante's as I dont like too many) will that not be OK? I also saw that the tail needs pulled at the top but I dont want to do that as I love his tail, that won't be too bad for a local show will it? I am hoping to clip him soon as he is a hairy monster and definitely not presentable currently with his hairy legs.

How should I do my ridden showing? Been told figure of eight for walk trot and canter. Does he need to be ridden in an outline or are they just looking at movement and not how "dressage pretty" it is?

Best I can do on clothing for me is a black jacket and cream jods.

If you don't want to get a velvet browband use a plain one, diamonte is not right for a RH class, the tail should be pulled but plait it if you prefer that will be fine for local level, get the legs trimmed and his jawline so he looks sleek and tidy. You should wear tweed ideally, with beige or cream jods, shirt and tie not a stock, if you only have a black jacket that is acceptable for RH, although navy is correct for ladies, still with a tie not stock.

He should go correctly, not "dressage pretty" but carrying himself in self carriage in a well educated way, you should show an extension in canter, not full on gallop but a decent medium canter that shows a difference from working canter.

Don't forget that even at local level the judge may ride so it could be worth checking before you go if you are concerned about him with different riders.

Echo this and use a discreet numnah, no square saddle cloths.

Cheers. I'll get a plain browband had a feeling the current one wouldnt be allowed. Not pulling his tail for the sake of one show, its too pretty and would probably look weird once done and ruined. The black jacket will have to do as I can't afford a tweed one, especially not for the sake of one show.

He'll go correctly but wasn't sure if I had to ride him like that or make him look easier to ride, wasn't quite sure what they look for in riding horse classes, was getting confused with that, hunter and hack classes. I can get that extension out of him now thanks to jumping so that should be fine. I dont think that they are riding at this one, pretty sure it said none of the judges were riding, its not like there are any qualifiers to anything else here. Even if they do he'll be fine but I'll do even less well as he isn't a comfortable horse to ride for most.

Your boy looks similar to mine in many ways. Can't quite see the tail but I did want to add that I didn't want to pull my boy's tail as I liked it full, but it looks so much better pulled now. It doesn't take away any of the fullness of the tail, but it looks much neater and gives his bum more definition which helps with showing.

Aw your lad is lovely. Pretty much the same as mine this is what his tail looks like, although its shorter now.



I just love how thick it is and dont want to ruin it. It needs shortened again and his mane needs pulled badly, it looks awful currently. But he will get neatened up, he has a bit of a beard currently on his face too that needs trimmed.
