Riding in a chambon?

A friend of mine regularly rides a horse for someone, and last time she rode the horse's owner had tacked him up with a chambon on for riding. My friend is aware that chambons aren't generally used for riding but wondered what the general consensus of opinion was, should they only be used for lunging or is riding ok? So I thought I'd ask you guys on her behalf.

I've always thought the riding alternative of a chambon was a de gogue?

I'd never ride in a chambon, regardless of what a SJ'er thinks, they weren't made to be ridden in. I agree with DG2007, the alternative for riding is the De Gogue (not that I'd ride in one of those either!!)

I lunge mine in a chambon regularly, but would never ride in it. I achieve the results I'm after by just lunging in it.

ditto. Use a de gogue!

I'd never ride in a Chambon either - the way it was described in the HH article gave no way for the rider to release it if anything untoward happens.

That would be my worry too Shilasdair, the rider cannot do anything to the chambon once in the saddle and if the horse was to get into difficulties...
It is solely for lunging use and always has been

I lunge regularly in a chambon - my vet actually loaned me one until I bought my own because he said it would be good for her back. He told me never to ride with it on - so I never have!
